Day of Mourning

It’s official. Got this in my e-mail:

Statement from Sen. Fred Thompson
McLean, VA – Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”

I guess his campaign was but pearls before swine.
Good news, though…
I’m still around! Yay!
UPDATE:
Jim Geraghty uses my own rhetoric in pointing out what he saw as the flaw with the Fred Thompson campaign. If only some candidate would punch the hippies.
UPDATE 2:
I think I’m going to let this sink in for today and then tomorrow I’ll come up with…
…wait for it…
…A PLAN!
UPDATE 3:
I heard Romney react on FOX News. It was extremely choppy, but he said Fred Thompson would make a good VP. Having Fred Thompson in reserves would pretty much make sure all of America’s enemies would be very interested in the U.S. President’s health.

  1. Prediction: Fred deigns to run as McCain’s VP, they win easily in November, McCain passes quietly in the Oval office about six months into his first term.
While the press will report it as simply old age, we will know it was “aneurysm by steely gaze” that vaulted Fred! into the Presidency.

  2. THAT IS SO AWESOME!!!
Fred Thompson sucks. Go Liberals and Democrats!!
The GOP is sure to lose and suck for decades to come thanks to Dubya.
I’m so glad you stupid Fred Thompson supporters are now officially pitiful losers.
    It’s official: YOU SUCK!

  3. Dave here clearly seems to have some masochistic tendencies. How else can one explain the desire to constantly read views of people diametrically opposed to yours and get your ass kicked for the stupidity you express?
    [kicking Dave’s ass ferociously]
    Hope you enjoyed it.

  4. Son of a vondruke.
This is what I get for sending in my ballot early.
But it begs the question; if you are presented with a ballot that has Fred Thompson’s name on it, and he has dropped out of the race, do you still get smote by voting for another candidate (assuming Fred doesn’t endorse any of the other ‘men’ running for the nomination)?

  5. I am in mourning…dammit, why did they have to do this to me? I had hopes, hopes of another conservative revolution, one where I can actively participate, not just sit idle as a youngster. Maybe there’s hope yet, but I doubt it.

  6. he he u losas be u so funneeee i enjoi this immenslee seeing u wear such sad faces and anguish. this is most lollerskates day evah to see fred lose. iz fantastic 4 our country that fred is defeat and fredheadz be wearin frownz.

  7. Thanks to every voter who voted for Huckabee because he’s a christian, McCain because it’s (Gah) “his turn”, and thanks to our party for not closing the primaries.
Yes, a LOT of the blame does fall on Fred himself, but it sure would have helped if some people weren’t IDIOTS!

  8. I’m still around! Yay!
    For which I am grateful.
I liked Fred. I wish he had done better. He was my second choice.
If there is anything good that came out of this, it was that he got the message across on some key issues, getting other candidates to clarify their positions.

  9. Fred wearing losa pants iz hoog big slapz in facez oh rite wingaz everywherez
u hearz me losaz? iz hoog big slapz in u faces!! he he he he he he he he he he

  10. FrankJ is obviously the best remaining candidate for President, but he isn’t thirty-five yet. Here’s my plan:
I’ll run for President. I don’t know who my running mate will be, but attractive horny women with small noses are invited to apply in person. Anyway, once I’m President, I’ll nominate Frank for Secretary of Defense. Fred Thompson can take care of any Democrat weenies (oops, a redundancy!) who oppose the nomination. Then I’ll let Frank run the country.
Sound like a winner to you folks?

  11. Patrick, since Frank is now running for some office somewhere at some time, I think we have to write his name in for every office on every ballot in order not to be smited.
he he he he go rite aheed. iz wood b a funneee waste of timez for u stoopid rite winga jerkpeep.
masta shake iz masta of deliciouz tasty shakes at burger kingz
bye bi again forevah 2 u dummeez
    :—————D

  12. Acutally, the Paulites (myself included) have already decided that it is unlikely that he will get the nomination, but have decided to continue spreading the message across the country, because in the current economic state our country is in, some things are more important than becoming president. That said, we are still fighting to win.

  13. No candidate in the history of the United States of America has ever been more deserving of defeat than Fred Dalton Thompson.
No supporters have ever been more deserving of a loss than the lazy and pathetic Fredheads. You people got blown out of the water and you deserved it. I hope it stings you incompetent idiots.

  14. #38- From what I understand, Fred’s mother is seriously ill, and he probably wants the family to spend time with her rather than continuing with a losing campaign. Can’t say I blame him.
The real question is, where do his followers go from here. I mean after you are done being mad.
I’d make a pitch for Huck, but I’m kind of doubting his viability after SC.

  15. #39 “Brad”
Who is this “Brad” person who claims to be supporting RP? I question his validity because he is writing clearly and has communicated his thoughts and beliefs in a precise and coherent manner. Know that I am suspicious of you… “Brad”.

  16. Fred as VP would be almost as awesome as him as president. Think about it, when he punches hippies, no one but Kwazy Kos Kids will care because he’s just the VP. Having him as McCain or Romney’s VP could really work for us.
I’m personally rooting for Romney now, he may look like a slick salesman, but at least he’s not the other canidates. He should definitly get Fred as his VP, it would give him an air of credibility he doesn’t have at the moment.

  17. Has anyone else noticed that people never use facts to criticize Fred Thompson? They ussually say one of two things “Fred SUCKS! RON PAUL ROCKS!” or “Fred is kinda lazy and bald”. There’s almost no other criticisms that I’ve heard about Fred Thompson besides those two. Have you guys heard any others?

  18. #50 – Posted by: on January 22, 2008 03:58 PM
Well, there are two or three commenters over at Hot Air who in the past have accused him of funneling campaign funds to his son, defending terrorists in court, and giving legal advice to Al-Kaddafi.

  19. Nuts. I was so hoping that for ONCE I was gonna get to vote FOR a president rather than against his opponent.
Forget it, if Fred is still on the ballot when Indiana holds its primary (long after I have been disenfranchised by the @$##%$& primary system) I am voting for him.

  20. Have you guys heard any others?
There are also the factual accusations that he has been a pig lobbyist insider for years. He likes to pretend he is a Washington outsider but it’s a load of BS. Fred was also took money to defend pro-abortionists.

  21. Bozo Fred Out, Ron Paul still in!
    HAVE FUN KIKES!
    #4 – Posted by: Josh on January 22, 2008 02:39 PM
Right, because Ron Paul is a legitimate candidate…
    eye roll
At least Fred had the decency to bow out gracefully.
Or awesomely, rather, since that’s the way he does everything.

  22. Well, bunkerboy called it (you can check) – Fred would be out after a disappointing 3rd-place finish in South Carolina.
Now stop you’re crying and get it together for the one guy who can beat both Hillary and Obama – Rudolph W. Giuliani.
Rudy’s made the mistake of letting the media pigeonhole him with the 9/11 narrative (and yeah, he mentions it himself now and then). But the real story is how a Republican mayor turned around the biggest Democratic cesspool in the country against all odds. He gets things done, and he gets them done his way.
He made New York work and he can make Washington work. That should be his mantra…

  23. This really is a dark day, and it goes beyond just one man (not that Fred is just a man) dropping out of the circus.
Bravo to the media for pushing the non-Conservative candidates… and to the disgustingly uninformed sheep known as the American electorate, I’d like to say:
Congratulations. You have driven out the only three Conservatives who were running– because they weren’t as good as the phonies and the RINO’s at playing these ridiculous campaign games. You who call yourselves Conservative and yet still voted for Juan McCain or Huckleberry Hound… you are a special kind of stupid. Your constant and annoying habit of being easily distracted by shiny objects is appalling and gives me an ice-cream headache.
This country is very close to the stage where an observer could say that we’re going to get what we deserve.
America took a big punch in the stomach today…
    End of mourning rant.

  24. Geez, Fred. I was looking forward to voting for you as my first vote. Thanks for running while you did, at least.
All the other candidates just suck so much, though! I’ll be mourning for the next 4-8 years.

  25. fred would make a lousy vp candidate — he is from a state that is going to go republican anyway — his presence won’t make a whit of difference in key places like Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa — worse still, not even republicans are interested in his candidacy
the thompson thing was never more than just a nice idea — he waited WAY too long to get in the race, and had an unrealistic aura of entitlement to the nomination — i think he would have made a good nominee if he had actually bothered to go about it in a different fashion
i think we will end up with McCain as candidate — perhaps with someone from Ohio or Minnesota (our own little RINO Governor Pawlenty is the chair of McCain’s Minnesota campaign, and his wife is wonderful) — Romney would be fine if he could actually deliver Massachusetts, but I think that might be a fool’s dream
i’m resigned to the fact that our best case scenario is that we will have a RINO in the white house next year — one could argue that we’ve had a RINO for the last 8 years — if you heard any of the dem debate, the thought of that shrill witch being president is too much to handle

That’s the worst part. Sometimes it seems like American sheeple want socialism. As long as they don’t have to get off their asses and work. I always thought American voters were smart. It is painfully obvious how wrong I was.

  27. Write in Fred?
Why? Just go ahead and vote Obama or Hitlary, it’s the same thing.
Yea, I’m disappointed that he has not the savior we need right now, but that is no reason to surrender to the Commie suck ass Dems.
Start stocking ammo and learning who your enemies are and where they live.
Hell is coming, and we’re coming with it!

  28. Forget it; it’s not the end of the world or anything. I don’t think we’re going to get anything like a conservative in the House for a while anyway, so lets just keep our sights on the future.
And again, it’s not like RP has any chance of being nominated for any position in Thompson’s stead; Paul will never be Prez, VP, Secretary of Anything, Adviser, etc. I’d be surprised if he even gets re-elected to Congress now that he’s been exposed as a closet Nazi fruitloop.
Screw it. It’ll take more than this to bring me down.

  29. as McCain is an acquaintance of Fred, i lean to McCain……
i just cannot get myself to go with if-the-mitt-fits-wear-it. however, i do agree vote for anyone on the final to keep hitlery or hussein-is-his-middle-name out.
good grief, huwckaloogy!! i could be a better president than that ding dong.

  30. You know, despite all of our hopes, we knew this was a distinct possibility. Many of us may be disappointed, but life goes on much in the same way as it always has. At least we knew to hope for the best but expect the worst, and the worst may not be as bad as we think; only time will tell.
As for the Ron Paul hoax, he could drop out now as well, but the difference is that no one but his fan base would notice. I posted this last night as a matter of perspective & where it concerns the spammers who can find nothing else to do but gloat (as though Thompson dropping out has something to do with them & somehow helps RP’s chances… lol!); it’s just a matter of time:
They know that they’re done, that Ron Paul was finished weeks ago, so all they can do is act out because either they’re sore losers, or they’re just feeling helpless after such a big disappointment. It comes as no surprise though; any time you have a group of thugs that can’t conceive that they might be mistaken & want to shout over everyone and everything in order to get their point across, then you have a group who will not or simply cannot listen to reason.
    Look at how they’ve made RP into the Golden Calf of their mottled political beliefs. Now that they’ve been “pwned” by every other candidate & the country in general, they are bitter souls unable to admit that they were wrong;
To them it’s all someone else’s fault & they want revenge.

This shattered illusion is going to have a lasting effect on them, as evidenced by the fact that when they attempt to demoralize anyone else they perceived as being in opposition to Ron Paul- as they’ve been doing & will continue to do here for some time to come- it’s really just a desperate way for them to feel somehow vindicated.
And those are some of the many, many ways where we are different; we don’t need revenge or smugness over someone else’s downfall to feel better about ourselves. Whatever happens in the coming months just might be a real wake up call, but in any case, we’ll still be all right.

  31. I’m with you “Pantera” #47. Romney’s not all that great but, at least he’s not the other candidates. Why does everybody suck this year? WHY?!?! Why now when I finally get to vote? I think someone else complained about this too. I guess they always suck because they’re politicians but, MAN!!!! They seem especially stinky this election and I do feel gypped. We in FL. vote SuperTuesday, too.

  32. No day or mourning for me, it’s Caucus Day here in Louisiana. So I pulled up the Fred sign and got on with it. Picked up a Romney sign from some nice folk right outside the polling place…. sigh.
Lets just hope that after selling his soul to the conservatives he is honest enough to stay sold. Mormons are generally honest dudes so there is some room for optimism.

  33. Sucks that Fred’s out of the race. His mom’s pretty sick right now. I supported Fred from day 1 because he’s right on the issues & most closely matches my values & principles. I hope he stays involved in the conservative movement.

  34. I just had a thought. (A dangerous thing you know, me with a thought)
What happens if we go through the primaries and there is no clear winner? We end up with a brokered convention? If they go through a couple of ballots at the convention and can’t choose anyone, they could go and draft Fred as the nominee.

  35. McCain? He IS a Democrat!
Look at what he has done in DC for 20+ years.
2nd Amendment issues? 20 year F- rating by every gun owner group and HE IS PROUD OFIT!
He supports bans on all sales and manufacture of semi-automatic weapons. He supports registration and admits that confiscations may be needed. He supported the New Orleans police disarming honest citizens without cause.
He was the #1 guy in helping Teddy K and friends from stopping Bush from appointing Judges that actually have a better understanding of the Founding Fathers than they do of Karl Marx to teh Federal Bench.
Freedom of speech? He co-authored McCain/Feingold for Christ sake!
He is a Gore loving, “Global Warming Will Kill Us all!” extremeist with A+ ratings by every left wing enviro group.
He and Joe Leiberman have written a Bill thaty will possible double Americas energy costs and deny drilling for our own oil on our own land.
He wants to help Kennedy and Schummer bring back the “Fairmess Doctrine” to kill talk radio.
And let’s not forget his writing the Amnesty Bill with his Best Bud Teddy K. and trying to open the doors for every peon in Mexico to over run us.
He is AGAINST the border fense.
He is AGAINST any laws requiring people to prove they are citizens in order to vote.
He is AGAINST denying Criminal aliens drivers licenses and social benefits.
Other than supporting the Surge, what exactly has he done that would cause anyone to mistake him for a Republican?
I’d rather Obama in the White House than Qwai Chang McCain.

  36. Yesterday I answered a phone poll about presidential candidates in the Republican primary, I said I would definitely be voting for Fred, but I don’t think I’ll have the chance now (in Illinois). I still don’t understand how 5 states mean shit in a national race.

  37. This is Brad, the Paulite, here to give everyone my opinions on the current political situation, whether you like it or not. Realistically, I would have liked to have seen Thompson win over Mccain or Giuliani, though I am not sure with Huckabee.
As for Ron Paul’s platform, he is not so far off from your beliefs as you would like to think. He is very much pro gun ownership, and he also supports a strong national defense, which is why, although he did not vote to invade Iraq, he did vote to attack the terrorists in Afghanistan. His platform is to go to the root of the terrorist issue, and pinpoint exactly why the terrorists attack us. It is not because we are free, but rather because we attack them. They call us the great Satan, and what have we done to prove them wrong?
Look at us economically right now. In the last day, the dollar has been freefalling, and the feds have made an emergency interest rate cut to try to stem the bleeding from the gaping hole that is our economical system. We claim to be capitalist, but the government is increasingly trying to control us. Do you really want to live in a free society? If so, give Ron Paul one more look, since right now you don’t have a better choice. (that is, besides moving to a mostly deserted island so small that no governments will feel the need to bother you there)

  38. JERKOFF (#89) – let me see if I can clear this up for you. If you want to pinpoint EXACTLY why the terrorists attack us, you have to stop putting the cart before the horse.
If we attack TERRORISTS, then obviously they’ve committed acts of TERROR against us and the world. Otherwise, we’d just be attacking complete innocents. And despite what your fevered mind has been warped into believing, the US has much better things to do with their military hardware.
This is what you get when there are no noteworthy candidates from the CPUSA or Socialist Workers Party…

  39. And he don’t like them jews. If’n it good ’nuff fer Brad, ‘s good ’nuff fer ‘me. People say Dr Paul don’t care fer Lincoln, but I disagree; He is a proud follower of George Lincoln Rockwell (yes, Rockwell. That ring any bells fer y’all?).
You bet the rest of us want to liv’n a free society- free of all them jews & their pickney street muscle. Once all that happens thru our revolution, Amerika can rise to it’s glorious praetorian status once ag’in
    Rawn Pawl, Yeeeehaw!

  40. And yes, that was a parody. It would be more amusing were it not so close to the truth.
Sorry, Brad. But be realistic; even if RP were this perfect being (he’s not) with a water tight plan (it most certainly is not), what makes you think he could just waltz in & implement ANY of it? Everything sounds good in theory, but his plans for America aren’t even that. He’s spent a good deal of his rapidly waning 15 minutes of fame talking in circles, so unless he has some mind blowing plan that works from every angle, plus a cure for the common cold, then I’m afraid he hasn’t got a chance. Even now, Thompson has a better chance than RP does.
I appreciate your attempt at being candid, but seriously; that isn’t even you talking- it’s pre-masticated rhetoric.
At least I admitted my sock-puppetry above. I’ve got the cajones to leave my mark. Can you, ANY of you say or do the same? None of you have yet…
BTW, leaving a URL to one of RP’s forums doesn’t count. It’s such a sissy thing to do, especially when no one can comment there without registering. I guess you’re all afraid of the same spite you perpetuate.
    Go figure.

  41. Fred was like that Warner Bros. Cartoon with the singing frog. The construction worker (the Blogosphere) spends all this time extolling the virtues of the Frog (Fred), but when anyone else looks at him, he just sits there and croaks.
The problem with Fred’s candidacy is that his supporters had more enthusiasm for it than the candidate did. At the end of the day, the construction worker can’t sell the Frog’s talents, the Frog has to.

  42. Ah well. As elsewhere, a write-in for FRED! is pissing your vote away. Romney/Thompson? Oh HELL YEAH, I could live with that. So long as McVain and Huckleberry are nowhere near the reins of power. The only remaining candidate better than Mitt on 2A is Huck, but in every other respect Huck is as RINO as Don Giuliani. Now, with FRED! in the co-pilot chair, we might get someplace yet! Whatever you do, don’t stay home on vote day. Does the number ’06 mean anything to you?

  43. I can live with voting for Romney or Giuliani, I suppose. But McCain? May as well have someone who admits to being a liberal so that the leftards in this country will have no one to blame when their cunning plans fall through. And I’m just itching to throw back the ‘Dissent is patriotic!’ meme right back in their dumb monkey faces, anyway.
But Huckabee would do far more damage that McCain would. McCain would just screw the country up. Huckabee would underscore the efforts of genuine Christians everywhere to bring others to Christ. He’s like Harry Powell in Night of the Hunter, and Jesus has some pretty strong words of rebuke for people like him. He’s going to have a lot of explaining to do for all his chicanery when he comes before the Father, that much I know.

  44. #92 AlanABQ
You aren’t accusing me of linking to Ron Paul’s forums, right, since I didn’t…must have been another poster I did not see.
I’m afraid that it doesn’t matter who becomes president, because even if Ron Paul’s plan were perfect, it would require a congress willing to implement it. This is the fatal flaw with our system; it gives too much power to these political dynasties that live only to perpetuate their own existence. You can’t just have a plan, but you have to be able to convince people that it is right, and get public opinion on your side, which will force the congress to then side with you.
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are arguing over health plans and who has the most experience, while on the republican side we are stuck between a fearmongering idiot by the name of Rudy Giuliani and a rich politician who can only sustain his campaign by donating mass sums of money to himself. If Giuliani gets elected, it will be the first time terrorists have decided our presidency, and if Romney is elected, I doubt someone with his financial record will be able to lead our country out of a deep recession. I dont even like Huckabee, seeing as he had some serious ethical problems while in office. Mccain and Thompson I like because they both seemed like strong individuals, however Mccain is crazy (possible side effect of torture), and Thompson would fall asleep the second he was elected. The only real problems I have with those two are their support of NAFTA, and the creation of a North American union. Mccain really does want to clean up Washington, but i’m not even sure that possible.
Anyways, it is a sad sad world in which we live.

  45. Why did Fred withdraw when he did? He’d have had a good shot to win Louisiana, and then be competitive in Florida. He was certainly in better shape than Giuliani, and arguably Huckabee, going forward. And honestly, how many Republicans are enthusiastic about McCain or Romney?
Thompson was manifestly the best candidate, but his campaign strategy was awful right down to the very end.
