So the vote to defund NPR was 239-171 against. Since I’ve never heard even one good argument why tax payers should be forced to pay for NPR and we need to cut money and one can hardly think of anything in the budget more unnecessary than them, I’m a bit surprised more Democrats didn’t vote for the defunding. Then again, they’ve been in a bit of mood lately for some reason.
I don’t think NPR will be as lucky with the next Congress, and if you’re going to start cutting the budget, might as well start there. And before anyone is like, “It’s only a couple million; who cares?” I say try embezzling $50,000 from the government and see if they’re like, “Oh, that’s just pennies; would cost more to prosecute you.”
Hmm… embezzling from the federal government…
You know, IMAO could use grants to do… um… smart stuff for public good. Please give me million grant and I will take good care of it.
What’s an NPR? Never heard of it. Certainly never listened to it.
“Hmm… embezzling from the federal government…”
You’re late to the game, Frank. What do you think the bailouts, TARP, Stimulus, QE2, Fannie & Freddie, etc, were all about?
Be more like Ace, Frank. Just pay your taxes, be ‘concerned’ and show us how ‘aware’ you are.
Just send in an application that you are studying the effect of sheep farts on the global climatic effect given their relationship to the rising tides across the world seas and you’re cool 2 mill will be in the mail!
Just like all liberal media, without the government or outside interests dumping money into their company they can’t muster enough genuine support from the small percentage of Americans who feel like they do and make up their cult following of listeners, advertisers, etc. to stay in business…meanwhile, all the while they claim they represent the voice of “most people”.
Nazi Pelosi Radio wouildn’t last three minutes in the free market.
I propose the IMAO grant to study the effects of farts of dinsaurs with rocket launchers. Of course, we will need a grant ot clone the dinosaurs with roclet launchers. And another grant to test the rockets. We can keep this up for years.
Can We Cut Anything?
I got a papercut on my finger once…it was nasty!
One thing I have to credit NPR is that they have never, ever shown any bias against politicians that voice any concerns about their relationship with the federal teat. It would simply be unprofessional.
If we can’t cut ‘um can we shoot ‘um?
Pos democrats, they just can’t bear the thought of them not spending our money.
Can we cut anything? How bout starting with their necks.
According to Newsbusters.org the federal government hands out $90 million annually to Public Bradcasting (TV and radio). NPR claims to only get 2-3% of their funding from the government, but the reality is that the bulk of that $90 million goes to the affiliate stations that broadcasts NPR and they in turn allocate a portion of their budget each year to pay to NPR in “dues”. So, it’s a bit more than a couple of million that they get no matter what they say. They’re just getting it from the bottom up so they can technically claim to not get a lot of money “directly” from the government. You should also check out the story on Newbusters where they list the salaries of some of the people involved. It’s obscene.
I’d say castrate them but I think that’s a term of employment there.
How will NPR change their programing to become commercially viable after their funding is cut?
Professional readings of famous telephone books?
Play by play descriptions of famous ballets?
Live broadcasts of the sound of paint drying?
It seems you’ve finally seen that late-night TV advertisement with the lunatic in the suit jacket, covered with dollar signs, trying to sell you info on how to apply for “free money” from the government. You need not pay for the info, just google “federal grants” and ignore all of the answers starting with “Ulysses S.” and you’ll get the same info.
I’m glad you addressed the BS argument that “cutting X funding won’t help because it is such a tiny %” blah, blah, blah. Ridiculous. It you take care of your pennies the dollars will take care of themselves. Every single bit of government spending should be scrutinized. The only reason we have a deficit is spending. Failing to tax did not cause a deficit.
Congress did decide to cut the Marine Corps budget. Now the Corp doesn’t serve me breakfast or dinner.
Enjoy your “free” medical coverage… I’m paying for it!!!
I myself like NPR, “This American Life” is fantastic, “All Things Considered” plays it straight down the middle unlike MSNBC and Fox. Nothing’s so American as “Prairie Home Companion”. “Car Talk” is informative and funny. “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” sometimes is pretty ok, good for doing housework to at least. Why do you want to defund NPR? I doubt I would ever listen to the radio otherwise. Aside from baseball games commercial radio is the pits. The money spent on NPR is a pittance compared to other government expenditures and well worth it. Let the market rule airwaves and get more political nonsense, pop radio, rap and tired old James Gang/Steve Miller songs? No thanks.

Yeah, but Congress certainly won’t pass a resolution to make sure you specifically don’t get any more money. In fact, if you’re a member of the CBC, they might give you a standing ovation.
