One of my ancestors was from Cork..I’m pretty sure she was the hand punched, top quality sort.
It took a real genius to look at a piece of bark like that and say, “You know? I think you could use something like this to plug the neck of a wine bottle!”
The modern wine industry used plastic corks. They are superior to the natural ones and factories can produce as many as you like for pennies.
@7 – True, although there’s a certain aesthetic pleasantness about natural corks. Plus their use and continued popularity indicates that civilization is still strong enough to support a luxury industry.
