The Wilderness Survival Skills Everyone Should Know

I’m a little dubious about that “How to Build an A-Frame Shelter” video. Because, yeah, I’ll just whip out my survival string and my survival plastic sheet that I *always* carry with me whenever I’m lost in the woods.

You should teach me how to make an A-frame out of my pants if you want it to count as a “survival” skill. Pretty sure I’ll have THOSE with me, at least.

Episode 1 of Breaking Bad to the contrary notwithstanding…

  1. I’m afraid I’m not cool enough to understand why having certain knowledge is called a “life hack”.

I’m sure I still have my old Wilderness Survival merit badge book in a box somewhere. Anyway I remember using palmetto leaves as the cover of my lean-to shelter. I didn’t have any plastic sheeting either.

  2. Well, if you’re in a situation where you might find yourself lost and needing to improvise shelter, perhaps you would be wearing boots. Cut a piece off of one or both shoe strings and adapt the resulting shorter string by skipping holes. If you prefer, you could use Virginia creeper vines for rope; Virginia creeper has five leaves in a cluster, not three, FYI.
