Pithy Question

Before the Midnight Special music calms everything down:

The focus here is not on the news story (Libs cancelling libs? Who cares?), but rather on a question a commenter had on the news story.

The story:

NY Times Vet Who Resigned Over ‘N-Word’ Use Said ‘Racism Is Over’
New York Post | February 15, 2021 | Aaron Feis

The veteran New York Times reporter who tendered his resignation after allegations he used the N-word [referring to it as a word; not using it against anyone] during a 2019 trip with high-schoolers also argued that “racism is over” and that black people “can get out of the ghetto if they want to” during the trip, according to a student who attended.

The question someone posted:

Which would be more racist, saying “black people can get out of the ghetto if they want to” or saying “black people can’t get out of the ghetto if they want to”?

By playing on one word, it neatly sums up the conflict between two divergent views, and at the same time calls attention to the fact that you’ll be called racist if you hold either one.

To the extent that there is a problem (“can”), some say it is caused by a lack of motivation — internal or external. Conservatives blame libs for creating disincentives for self-improvement. Libs’ alternative (“can’t”) seems to be that the cause is a lack of ability — since opportunities exist, and money has been thrown at the problem in billions and trillions since the Sixties.

Snubbed by Obama? Joe Biden says White House ‘residence’ was unseen by him – until he moved in
Fox News | 2/17/2021 | Dom Calicchio

The disclosure suggests Barack Obama never invited Biden into the private area of the White House.

President Joe Biden served in the U.S. Senate for more than 30 years, and then served eight years as Barack Obama’s vice president. But until he moved in last month, he said Tuesday night, he’d never been inside the presidential “residence” area of the White House.

Biden made the disclosure during a town hall event in Milwaukee,

“I had been in the Oval Office a hundred times as vice president — more than that — every morning for the initial meetings but I had never been up in the residence,” Biden said.

Biden: “I get up in the morning, I look at Jill, and say, ‘Where the hell are we?’”

Student Loan Debtors Refusing to Pay Off Debt in Anticipation of Biden Forgiveness
PJ Media | 02/15/2021 | Rick Moran

There was a viral Facebook post that appeared on February 2nd claiming student loan debt had been forgiven by President Biden. “My student loans are gone,” reads a Feb. 2nd Facebook post with hundreds of shares. “I love you Biden!”

The sentiment is probably appreciated but the news is premature. Biden has yet to issue an executive order on student loan debt. Many Democrats are urging the president to cancel $50,000 in debt with the stroke of a pen.

But Biden says he would much rather involve Congress in the decision. And getting any kind of consensus on forgiving student loan debt is going to be very difficult.

Some student loan debtors have decided to have a “debt strike” and refuse to pay on their loans until Biden acts.

The anticipation that Biden will act soon is driving the effort. Like the migrants lining up at the border ready and waiting for Biden’s amnesty, the student loan debtors are under the impression their loans will magically disappear once Biden takes action.
