Bill To Require Speed Limiters in California Cars Introduced in Senate

A bill to require all cars sold or made in California after 2027 to have devices limiting their top speed to only ten miles per hour above the speed limit was introduced in the Senate on Wednesday.

Senate Bill 961, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), would specifically require certain vehicles, commencing with the 2027 model year, to be equipped with an intelligent speed limiter that would limit the speed of the vehicle to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. The bill would exempt emergency vehicles from this requirement and would authorize the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol to authorize the disabling of the system on other vehicles.

A man’s got to know his limitations. And who’s imposing them.

    • My car knows, it shows up on my dashboard. I bet the gps has access to maps for positioning that include what the road department has placed. I will say it is not always accurate if the speed limit has changed recently and the data has not been updated it shows the old limit.

      • Lately I have had to be on a main highway while the wife had the gps girl on her phone for directions….
I was doing a little over 130km per hour in a 100km zone. The google girl would mention that there was a speed trap ahead…happened a few times and never a speed trap…I think there are 3 things here..1)they know exactly where we are..2) how fast we are going..and 3) google girl has to nut up and just learn to hang on for the ride..

    • All modern cars have speed limiters already, usually factory set to match the speed ratings of the stock tires, e.g. 94mph, 112 mph. That’s to protect everybody (especially the manufacturer) from overheating the tires and causing catastrophic blowouts. Most people will never know because they will never go fast enough to hit it.

Anecdote: My ’03 S10 had one at 94 mph. It was a 4×4, V6, Stickshift truck. First time I hit the limiter, it instantly shut off the engine for about 10 seconds. It was so sudden and caused the truck to slow down so violently I literally checked my rearview mirror to see if my engine or transmission had fallen out or come apart. Our Tahoe had the same limiter, but it smoothly just quits accelerating at that point.

  1. Logic says this law makes perfect sense, way more sense than any gun control law. There is pretty much no good, legal reason to go more than 10 over, and excessive speed kills a lot of people every year, way more than legally purchased guns do. Plus driving is a privilidge, not a god given right protected by the constitution.

However, what an uncool, sissy, bitch move. The law that says “though shall not go faster than the speed posted” already fulfills the need. Just like gun laws, don’t need new ones, if it’s really important just enforce the existing laws. Better yet, just let darwin enforce the laws and call it a day.
