Work Will Set You Free

Almost through the heavy spot in work. While I’m blogging less you can check out this new blog from Laurence Simon of the now defunct Amish Tech Support: Ted Rall Is Full of Crap (thanks to Right Wing News for pointing me to it). My opinion is that Ted Rall should be ignored, but Laurence makes not ignoring him so much fun!
BTW, Tuesday is new DVD day, and I found out today is the re-release of my all-time favorite movie (and, according to a sticker on the cover, Quentin Tarantino’s favorite too), fully-restored with added footage: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The deleted scenes were in the Italian dub (which I had on my previous, now inferior DVD version), so they actually got Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach (who, in my eyes, is the star of the movie) to redub the new scenes. Have it front of me now, as I stopped by Best Buy on the way home to pick it up. Sweeeet!
Also, I’ve now decided to start making a legal music collection to listen to at work. Any reccomendations, new groups and old? I like rock – none of that pansy-ass pop crap – and I’m trying to hone in on what are some good albums to start with.
Later, ronin.

  1. I agree with Max. Metallica does kick ass. Get “Ride the Lightning” just for the song Fade to Black. Just do not kill yourself afterwards. 😉
Also, get the two albums by Three Doors Down. Not only are they amazing, they are actully intelligent. The even support our troops. 😀
If you are into “rap”, Eminem is my favourite.
Oh, also, if you like 80s music, I recommend any and everything by Queen.

  2. I’ll second the Metallica and Evanescence- as well as add Incubus (but not their new cd cuz they turned into a bunch of liberal hippies), Nirvana, Offspring (again, go with the old stuff), Pearl Jam, Counting Crowes, Verve Pipe, maybe some Sublime or even Seether…
or you could go for some punk- Guttermouth, the Vandals, Circle Jerks, TSOL, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys- but be careful, cuz some of the stuff has a definite liberal slant. If you want to avoid that, Guttermouth and Vandals would be best, and don’t listen to TSOL. Good luck, have fun, and if I think of anything else worthwhile I’ll let you know. 🙂

  3. Yeah go for some sublime. They mixed everything, throwing punk rock and reggae in wit hip hop and ska. Overall a f*cking awesome band.
Bob Marley is a necessity, as is Nirvana, The Clash, Weezer, Beastie Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin, Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Tool, Death Cab for Cutie, Fugazi, The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Postal Service, and maybe The Fugees.
Really it depends on your music taste, but I think that this list is a very good list, and if you get most of this, your collection will be well rounded with lots of quality artists.

  4. “or you could go for some punk- Guttermouth, the Vandals, Circle Jerks, TSOL, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys- but be careful, cuz some of the stuff has a definite liberal slant.”
Ooh, good taste. As an added bonus, The Vandals are Republicans (though you’re right about the political leanings of most of those bands).

  5. alot of good suggestions here, I’d say definitely go with the Offspring and Nirvana. Also Deftones, Cake, Helmet, Fuel, and Tool. Plus no collection is complete without some Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Beatles, Elvis, Aretha Franklin and Pink Floyd. I also love Outkast, and Ani DiFranco, but both of those might be too liberal for you.
Thats just to get started, I’ll post more as I think of them.

  6. “Yeah….at 5:00. Then they expect you to come back the next day.”
I think Frank’s title for the post refers to the sign Arbeit Macht Frei (work will set you free) on the gates to some of the Nazi concentration camps.
More music suggestions: Johnny Cash, Blondie, Joan Jet, deifinitely check out the song “Guns” by D.I. It rocks, and you’ll appreciate the lyrics.

  7. Free legal downloads by good local (Cleveland area) bands…

  8. …then, once your head is done hurting from all the screaming listed above, put on THORNHILL by Moxy Fruvous.
Maybe also some Smithereens. 11 and BLOW UP are good ones, but ESPECIALLY FOR YOU is still the best rock album of the 80s.

  9. If you can get to it from work, use http://www.Launch.com.
You can tailor the music you want to hear, and BLOCK artists / songs you never want to hear.
    Very cool.
I thought the music / radio was good, but I’ve learned that the music videos are better. (Hint: you can skip the commercials by going to full screen and hitting CTRL-F.)

  10. I’ve found that audiobooks make the day go by much quicker, although they’re not so great if you’re trying to be productive.
So my recommendation would be to resort to improving your mind when you either a) have mindless grunt work to do or b) want to procrastinate (frowning at a technical report while you listen helps give the appearance of being busy).
Your local library probably has a bunch.

  11. If you want music suggestions, talk to Blackfive. He’s got pretty good taste it seems.
I would say definitely some Yellowcard, Outkast, Lostprophets, Reel Big Fish. I don’t really know, there’s so much good stuff out there.

  12. Try some of these:
    Van Helsing’s Curse
    Trans-Siberian Orchestra
    Rhapsody
    Symphony X
    Stratovarius
    Blind Guardian
Mostly baroque/classical inspired speed metal–mainstream rock is a bit too rowdy and angry for me.
If anyone knows any more of these kinds of bands, I’m all ears 🙂

  13. Yeah I agree with Max up there. Metallica, Godsmack, Nickelback(the only good thing from Canada)and Linkin Park. Course those are more hard rock. Trapt and Smile Empty Soul are also worth a look.

  14. Last two I bought were Black Sabbath and Dire Straits. Both excellent (and both self-titled debut albums, I think). YMMV of course.
The two you HAVE to own if you don’t already are Dark Side of the Moon, and the Beatles’ White Album.

  15. I know its been said before, but Sublime is a definite must.
    Also, AC/DC kicks ass.
And don’t forget the all time greatest southern rock band: Lynyrd Skynyrd. (“Won’t you flyyyyyy hiiiiiiiiiiigh freeeeeee birrrrrd yea”)
Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals is a damn good band.
Modest Mouse is pretty cool, although definitely lefties.
And last but not least, you can’t go wrong with some good ole Creedence Clearwater Revival.

  16. The Who is an excellent classic rock choice, but like mnay bands I don’t know that any particular album is “well-compiled” (a few great tracks and a number of mediocre). Anywho, Teenage Wasteland, Pinball Wizard, Won’t Get Fooled Again all excellent songs.

  17. Superstar Car Wash by the Goo Goo Dolls (cd before they hit it big)
Exile on Main St by The Rolling Stones (the undisputed best band ever)
    Throwing Copper by Live
    Empty by Tait (Christian rock)
Red Dirt Road by Brooks & Dunn (more rock than country)
Born to Run (old) or The Rising (new) by Bruce Springsteen

  18. Because I’m picky about music, I rarely buy a whole CD at a time.
For a good rock track, check these out:
    The Vines – Get Free
Drowning Pool w/ Rob Zombie – The Man Without Fear
Rob Zombie – 2 Lane Blacktop
    The Datsun’s – Supergyration
    Supersuckers – Psyched Out
For more eclectic (read: Rap/Hip Hop), I suggest:
Outkast – Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (the whole CD is great)
    N.E.R.D. – Lapdance
    Skunk Anasie – Carmen Queasy
DMX – Grand Champ (great CD)
Don’t discount HipHop music, It’s come a long way since the early 90’s, and it actually a legitimate music now, each song has it’s own tune and distinguishable characteristics.

  19. Sublime – 40oz. to Freedom, or their self-titled album
AC/DC – High Voltage, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Highway to Hell, Back in Black, Stiff Upper Lip
    Lynyrd Skynyrd – Pronounced Leh-nerd Skeh-nerd, & Second Helpings
Ben Harper – Burn To Shine, The Will to Live, & Diamonds on the Inside
    CCR – Cosmo’s Factory
Modest Mouse – Good News For People Who Love Bad News

  20. I don’t feel guilty about taking bribes from vendors, as long as I don’t let it influence my decision. We have a saying in Texas politics, and it works well for the business world: “If you can’t eat their steak, drink their whiskey, sleep with their women and still vote against them, you don’t belong in the lege.”
