SarahK and I (who now have season passes to Disney World) had just recently been on that ride the boy died on yesterday. It’s a mission to Mars simulator where Gary Sinise of Forest Gump and Apollo 13 fame plays mission control, and, at no point he told me I risked death. I tend to trust him since he plays a no nonsense Marine on CSI: NY. I had fun, but one woman (you go in groups of four) wasn’t hitting her buttons at the appropriate moments and risked the entire mission.
After the ride, SarahK felt a bit queasy and had to sit down. To me, it was about as intense as a rocking chair (a good rocking chair).
Anyway, they’ve already reopened the ride. Maybe the Epcot center can now start selling “I survived Mission: Space” t-shirts.
Oh, and apropos to nothing, you know how they make Mickey the central character of everything at Disney? But, has anyone in the history of time ever said, “Mickey is my favorite Disney character!”? I mean, he has like no defined personality, and even Pluto is at least ten times more interesting.
If one day it’s revealed the Mickey is a serial killer, I would not be that surprised. After all this time of seeing him, I know nothing about him and anything is possible with that overgrown mouse.

I asked a friend how his trip to Disney went. His answer:
“The Mouse wants ALL of your cheese”
The ride is fun in retrospect. Actually, my parasailing trip made me realize just how much fun it was to go on Mission Space (for those who dont know, unless you’re in a hurricane, parasailing isnt that much fun). 2 G’s is not that much, but it does give you a memorable experience.
The thing is, its fun, but its no more intense than riding a normal roller coaster, you just experience constant forces, not on and off forces.
The bottom line is that having been on the line, I dont see how someone could die from riding that ride. I believe they are doing an autopsy, and that may reveal that the kid had some strange condition.
BTW, 100 Million is alot to spend on a ride.
Ya know, forgive me, but I don’t understand the hoopla over tihs.
How many people rode this thing prior to this incident? A million, at least, I should think.
It strikes me it’d be inda hard, logically to pin any fault on Disney, or the ride.

Never been to Disneyland or Disneyworld. For thrills I sometimes drive through the streets of DC after midnight.

From what I heard, the kid looked bad before he went on the ride. It seems that unless someone is already in bad shape or tries really hard to escape the safety harnesses (like that infamous decapitation on Space Mountain), rides, especially the ones from recognized amusement parks are basically safe.
And no, I don’t work for Walt Disney 🙂
