Here’s a neat article at the Huffington Post about the politics of Matt Parker and Trey Stone of South Park. Basically, they say everyone makes fun of the Republicans so they pick other targets to be original and they like to make sure to skewer everyone.
Actually, the fascinating part is the angry comments section on HuffPo. Basically, many liberals do not think neutrality is allowed. They find their politics so important that it’s the responsibility of anyone in the media to espouse them, and parodying them at all is a betrayal; giving equal time to Republicans is like giving equal time to Hitler, and everyone should know that. And then these supremely humorless people go on about how conservatives can’t be funny. Yes, it’s the ones constantly shouting “That’s not funny!” who have the great senses of humor.
Oh, and as a side note, why does P.J. O’Rourke always appear in the liberals’ talking point about humor as the only funny conservative? Kinda makes me suspicious of him. Then again, I get the feeling most haven’t actually read him, and they’re just repeating each other in citing him.
Anywho, I notice that anyone who is really interested in neutrality — either making a real effort to be fair or making sure not to put his political views into his work — tends to be right-leaning. Conservatives are happy having art and politics and keeping those two separate, but liberals feel like their politics must permeate everything. I remember Jay Nordlinger of National Review Online talked for a while about “safe zones” and how he couldn’t find any, as even going to a symphony would include a lecture on liberal politics and the evils of Republicans.
Now, there certainly are conservatives obsessed with their politics, but that seems to be an instinct that some conservatives have but all liberals do. So what is it with liberals that they can’t ever let go of their politics and have to put them in everything? Is it just part of them being useless and not having anything else of meaning in their lives? Whatever the reason, let it be a warning. If you find yourself constantly thinking about politics and bringing up Obama or whatnot in every conversation, then chill. Part of being a conservative is knowing when not to care about politics.
I never thought Huff-Po and neat would be used in the same sentence to describe and article from the wasteland of a website.
Great article but, I almost couldn’t finish it because it was actually SERIOUS! You feeling okay, Frank?
Of course all they think about is their politics. After all, oobamah inherited a losing hockey team from Booosh, and we didn’t win because we hadn’t passed health care. The evil republicans are penetrating the airwaves with people making fun of the very smirt liberals, which is wrong because they are so smirt. Making fun of liberals is like making fun of monkeys, it should be banned.
Q: How many Liberals does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: THAT’S NOT FUNNY!!
How many liberals does it take to screw in a lightbulb? One…just hold it in the socket and as the world revolves around them it will screw it’s self in!
#3 Plenty…. the libbie blogs are blaming the hockey loss on Canadian vs. American healthcare. Really.
Liberals take themselves way too seriously. They see themselves as superior to everyone else (ie: the libbies have higher I.Q.’s meme) and we are not to question them. Kind of like the father we all knew down the street who smacked his children when they kidded around with him.
Wait! Frank reads HuffPo? And he made fun of me for seeing a Carrot Top show in Las Vegas?
Please, Basil. Tell us more.
#4,
Liberals don’t screw in light bulbs. Light bulbs are destroying the planet.
You’re right Son of Bob…liberals only screw tax payers.
correct zzyzx…and fat interns.
Its always been pretty clear that the guys are either libertarians or totally politically agnostic. either way i commend them for being able to not fall in to that trap of cheap laughs that come with bush bashing.
How many liberals does it take to screw-in a light bulb??
A: Infinitely many. Liberals are screwed.
#9-
So I will fall back on my favorite lightbulb joke:
Q: How many mice does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Two, but Lord knows how they got in there!
Liberals’ Secular ‘Humanism’ is the religion they adhere to. In it they live, and move, and have their being. Like Islamic Jihadis, they will not tolerate anyone making fun of their religion. Their god is only as big as their own minds, and so, is quite impotent.
Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow was the best South Park ever.
George Bush doesn’t care about beavers!
Safe to say if it was just more liberal pukery, it wouldn’t have been on for 14 years.
Now that they’ve confessed that they aren’t part of the propaganda machine, I bet someone decides to boycott it.
I did not screw in that light bulb
“Why is Janeane Garafolo, who’s been right about EVERYTHING the last 8 years ridiculed when she talks politics…….”
Probably the same reason someone who’d make that statement is ridiculed.
Someone might want to tell them that “the last 8 years” now includes the last 1 year and 40 days.
Serious article: serious reply.
If you haven’t seen Team America, you must. It is your duty. I’ve never liked South Park, but Team America is pure genius. Millions satisfied. You won’t be disappointed, nor will you ask for a refund.
Carrot Top…research project right?
MarkoMancuso, DeckApe:
Wife and I were in Las Vegas in 2007. We went to a Carrot Top show. What else is there to tell?
But, it’s not about me. It’s about Frank. Just ask him!
How many liberals does it take to screw-in a light bulb??
A. Not enough info. You got your liberals, turning from the right and your liberals turning from the left. Your centrist liberals and your liberals under another name (progressives). You need a lot more data for a vector analysis. Let fund/form a committee.
Would you rather watch the worst episode of South Park or the best episode of Family Guy?
Trick question – Family Guy has never had a best episode.
That better not be an INCANDESCENT lightbulb!!!
I’ll actually give them some credence.
A lot of them are angry because the show gets under their skin. They don’t think South Park is neutral, they think it skewers them, and that it makes a point of skewering them more than Republicans (claims to neutrality be damned). And I think they’re right.
It seems like the interviewer is a South Park fan and, given their history of siding with conservatives a lot, is trying to come with gotcha moment along the lines of “see, see they really like us! Got that, Republicans, they hate you, they’re not on your side!” The only problem with that is that when they skewer Republicans it’s always on a certain set of specific aspects and when they skewer Democrats it’s always on (a whole lot more) specific aspects–there’s a gigantic libertarian strain running throughout the entire show and you’d have to be blind not to see it.
I’d like to see the unedited version of the interview instead of paraphrasing and cutting and pasting of quotes. I really think this interviewer is grasping at straws to stick it to the Republicans and make himself feel better about liking a show produced by a couple guys who seem cool and funny to him and yet make fun of him constantly.
They don’t side with anyone. They make it a point to be counter-culture douchebags.
The show is well written, but if you are looking for any sort of consistent ideology there, you are out of luck.
It’s a handful of feces delivered by a fan.
