Shutdown Over!

Well, I think the shutdown is over. Been kind of busy and not following the news closely as I’m almost done with the manuscript for my next book — longer than any of my previous one and it will also be out in print this time. So kind of focusing on that right now, and after it’s done I should be able to blog more.

So kind of missed it: What was this whole shutdown thing trying to accomplish anyway?

  1. To paraphrase Lincoln.

A Party divided against itself cannot stand. I believe the Republican Party cannot endure, permanently, half RINO and half free. I do not expect the Party to be dissolved — I do not expect the Republicans to fall — but I do expect they will cease to be divided. They will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of Big Government will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its enablers will push it forward, till it shall become permanent in the United States, for the old as well as young — in the North as well as South.

  2. Veeshir,
Superego was completed back in January and I’m just waiting on publishers. I’m pretty sure it will get a publisher which is why I haven’t self-published, but it’s a longer wait than I thought. I’ve actually completed another novel since then I’m really excited about — maybe I’ll put some of that one on the blog because this whole waiting years to get feedback is hard for a blogger.

The book I mentioned is this post is one I have a contract for with HarperCollins and is technically a non-fiction book — as much as this blog is non-fiction, I guess. It will be a self-help book — the definitive self-help book.

  3. @4 Walrus:

I think you’ve hit on something — something pretty good.

I’ll bet that if, just as you did, one replaced the word “country” with “Republican Party”
and the word “slavery” with “big government”
    and “slave” with “individual”
in old anti-slavery speeches, you’d be astonished at how accurate they sound.

    It’s a winning formula.

Here’s one quick experiment: Frederick Douglass, 1850:

“More than twenty years of my life were consumed in a state of [big government]. My childhood was environed by the baneful peculiarities of the [big government] system. I grew up to manhood in the presence of this hydra-headed monster — not as a master — not as an idle spectator — not as a guest of [big government] — but as AN [INDIVIDUAL].

“. . . In law, the [individual] can own nothing, possess nothing, acquire nothing, but what must belong to another. To eat the fruit of his own toil, to clothe his person with the work of his own hands, is considered stealing. He toils that others may reap the fruit; he is industrious that others may live in idleness.

” . . The very accompaniments of the [big government] system, stamp it as the offspring of hell itself. To ensure good behavior, the [big government] [H]older relies on the whip; to induce proper humility, he relies on the whip; to rebuke what he is pleased to term insolence, he relies on the whip . . .

” . . . The first work of [big government] is to mar and deface those characteristics of its victims which distinguish men from things, and persons from property. Its first aim is to destroy all sense of high moral and religious responsibility. It reduces man to a mere machine. It cuts him off from his maker, it hides him from the laws of God, and leaves him to grope his way from time to eternity in the dark, under the arbitrary and despotic control of a frail, depraved, and sinful fellow-man.”

    …
Wow. Douglass would have made a great blogger.

  4. What if I don’t want to help myself?
And if I’m reading something you wrote and doing it, how can it be self-help?

Or are you saying you’re trying to help yourself?
    I figure the last.

I did forget to answer your question.
What was this whole shutdown thing trying to accomplish anyway?

As nearly as I can tell, it was so our fine political, media, social and moral betters could bash tea partiers.

That’s all they seemed to accomplish.

As for the stated purpose, it seemed to me they were arguing over whether we’d go a little over a $trillion in debt this year or a little under.

  5. @12 A point of which the Left constantly fails to grasp is that Big Government cannot survive without enslaving enough people to make it run. The reason my example and yours work is that the underlying truth is plain, it is both fundamental and unavoidable.
