Thursday Night Open Thread

People consider R.E.M. a band from Georgia, but are they? Sure, the band was formed in Athens, and the lead singer, Michael Stipe, was born in Georgia, but he moved away — military brat — when he was young. The guitarist, Peter Buck, was born in California, but he graduated high school in Georgia then went to UGA, so there is an actual connection. Bassist Mike Mills is from California, too, but moved to Macon as a pre-teen. Drummer Bill Berry is from Minnesota, but ended up in Macon as a teen. So “from Georgia?” Yeah. Sure. But I actually have more Georgia cred than the members of that band do. But I got nowhere near the the talent.

    • I like Popeyes just fine. I haven’t had their chicken sandwich yet and am in no hurry. As much as I like their spicy chicken, I’ve had miserable experiences with their service and attitude.

This is where Chic Fil A will never let me down. The sandwiches are always great, the place is always clean, and the service is always above average.

Waffle fries still not my thing.

  1. The internet age:

I’ve replaced sending birthday cards in favor of sending birthday emails.

I’ve sent congratulations and condolences via emails.

I never had to send a break-up email, but it seems like a sound idea — depending on the volatility of the person in question, of course.

At shops and restaurants — and in most jobs — you never even pick up a pen.

Email resumes have replaced paper resumes.

So, are pen and paper going the way of the buggy whip?

And are process servers still a thing, or only used for dramatic effect in movies?

  2. Michael Stipe May be a big lib but aside from his musical talent, on one occasion he really impressed me. He was being interviewed by Bill Maher (I saw part of the interview from another source.).

Despite Maher’s relentless teasing of Stipe for it, Michael wouldn’t use curse words. He was angry at President Bush but he didn’t let BDS take hold of him.

He may be different now and have gone full potty mouth in his Trump derangement syndrome, I don’t know. However in that one shining moment, he was not being just another foul mouthed NPC like everyone around him.
