When I was 23 I tried starting a blog, but I was told that I had to wait until the internet was invented. When I was 18 I was already taking “all expenses paid” trips to foreign countries

…AND free surgery to fix a kneecap dislocated during interrogation
…AND free adrenalin surges when people tried to kill me
…AND worked 50-60 hours a week for free (no overtime)
…AND free wakeup calls at zero dark thirty
…AND several free lunches consisting of white rice and chunks of goat (that probably died of old age)
First off – we don’t get “stuck in trees”. We’re waiting for someone to bring us tuna. You’d be surprised how often this works.
Secondly, we can spout metaphors all day – whether we happen to be in a tree waiting for tuna or not. For example:

Most Second Lieutenants (or Ensigns for the Navy folk) are commissioned well before the age of 26 and have been promoted to First Lieutenant (or Lieutenant Junior Grade) by the age of 25…are they still kids? Not to mention someone who enlists right out of high school. They could be Sergeant (E5) or Staff Sergeant (E6) by the age of 26. Hardly “kids”…I don’t think the issue is age, it think it is lack of responsibility. When I was in college studying to be a teacher they told us to set high yet attainable expectations for the students and they would meet them. Today the government only seems to have one expectation for the youth of America…vote for us and we will give you free crap. For the record, I left the teaching game after six years and now work in the private sector…it is surprising how many of my fellow employees are also former teachers.
when i was 26 i had a BA in chem, an MD and was two years into a five year surgical residency. my lazy older brother was only two years into a BA, but he blames it on the four years, complete with combat tour, in the USMC and the follow up stint as a fireman.

@7 Crabby….it is I who feel humbled following in the footsteps of those before me and watching in awe as the next generation of warriors blaze new trails while their ‘intellectual betters’ are living in their mom’s basement because the right job hasn’t come along.
That’s one thing that’s always ticked me off about how the left protrays young military as victims. They’re poor so they join. They’re uneducated so they join. There’s no work so they join.
The truth is that our current professional military (of all ages) could run rings around these big brain losers! Not only are vets as smart (if not smarter), but they have an abundance of two things missing from many of their civilian peers: common sense and life experience.
Instead of whining about how unfair life is, they just evaluate the situation and make the best decision to improve their lot. They don’t wait for mom, dad, or Uncle Government to make things better…they do it themselves. And if that means taking a low paying job while they get a degree or certification, then that’s what they do. Once they get their foot in the door, all their leadership skills and view of reality helps them up the ladder.
If they need help, it is to have opportunity provided, NOT outcome ensured!
Obama’s administration is both transparent and opaque until you try and observe it, at that point you are targeted by the IRS and the NSA starts recording all of your phone calls.
