For the longest time, I just listened to whatever was on the radio and never gave it too much attention. Now, I’ve decided to start buying CD’s and really start appreciating music. I guess part of the inspiration was the movie School of Rock (a great, great family film) which interested me in taking a closer look into music.
Anyhoo, I’ve listened to a number of CD’s at work for a week or so now, so I’ll give my impressions, and maybe you can give me some more suggestions based on them.
Crash of ’47 – Atomship
You probably know this group for being one of my advertisers for a while. They definitely have a unique sound, but a lot of the songs are a bit repetitive. Still, I like the album for the most part, and my favorite songs are “Pencil Fight” and “Withered”.
Nevermind – Nirvana
Simply a classic. None of the songs seem like filler, and I enjoy every one. I’d be hard pressed to pick favorites, but I particular love the start of “Breed”. It’s awesome!
Really, people, if you are a rich, top selling music artist – and we’ve all been there – don’t commit suicide. Stick it out… even if you’re married to Courtney Love.
Satellite – P.O.D.
I like P.O.D. They’re this play it loud heavy metal group, but, if you listen carefully to the lyrics, you’ll be like, “Hey! They’re talking about Jesus!”
Anyway, this is another great album where I enjoyed most of the songs on it. My favorite, interestingly enough, is “Boom”, which I’ve yet to find any religious connotations in.
Leave a Whisper – Shinedown
It’s ‘ight. To be honest, I listened to it a number of times through but can’t recall any tracks other than the first (“Fly From the Inside”) and the last (“45”) which I know from the radio. Maybe it will grow on me, but, so far, it hasn’t left much of an impression.
The Matrix Reloaded Soundtrack
Instead of selling the soundtrack and the musical score (are those the correct words to differentiate the two?) separately as with the first Matrix movie, you get both in one 2 CD set for Reloaded.
As for the soundtrack, it’s pretty good, but not as good as the first one (which I still need to get). I probably like the P.O.D. song “Sleeping Awake” best, though the Marilyn Mason and Rob Zombie songs are good too. I also really like the name of the Rage Against the Machine song “Calm Like a Bomb”. Next time someone ask me how I am, I’m going to answer with that.
In the end, I like the musical score better than the soundtrack, especially like the ten minute “Mona Lisa Overdrive” which is the score from the highway chase scene in the movie. It’s got a techno beat mixed in with the regular music score and is great to work to.
Well, I got a number of more new albums through Amazon to start listening to, including some Metallica, Rush, and Iced Earth (which I found out about from an awesome interview where Jon Schaffer give the smack down to a wacko, anti-war Canadian).
Later, ronin.

cool. hey… could I send my band’s EP for review?
Can post you the MP3’s
I said I liked the title, dude.
I’m noticing a conspicuous lack of Polka…
…and not a single Irish chant…..
And frankly, all the music could use more cowbell.
Or at least the most unappreciated musical instrument – The TRIANGLE!
“Look what they did to my triangle!” -Ralphie
Wheres the Sublime?
Frank,
Being in FLA (F***ing Lower Alabama) I’d have thought that you be listening to SCOTS (Southern Culture On The Skids)…particularly ‘Dirt Track Date.’ GREAT trashabilly rock!
You can’t go wrong with Nirvana: Nevermind.
Instead of buying your CD’s from a chain, subscribe to iTunes. They have most everything, and you can get songs for 99 cents, or an entire album for (usually) 9.99.
Then, you burn them to a CDR. The only bad thing is that they download in M4P format (freaky-deeky dutch format,) so you can only play the files out of iTunes, unless you convert them (or burn them, then re-rip them.)
iced earth is great metal pure and simple. YOu of all people should own their cd the glorious burden, Plus they have former Judas Preist Frontamn Tim Ripper Owens as their singer now!
El Jefe,
Freaky! I’m listening to Camel Walk right now…
“[walken]I GOTTA have more COWBELL, baby.
Guess WHAT?
I got a FEVER,
and the only PRESCRIPTION,
is more COWBELL.[/walken]”
Get any Blue Oyster Cult yet, Frank? 😉
Seriously though, one of my favotire bands is The Mavericks (Country/Alternative). For more bluesy rock, check out Gov’t Mule. And you can NEVER go wrong with ‘tallica, baby. 😀
You also might want to check out a band called the Beatnik Turtle …I have no connection to the band and just heard of them recently…
Frank you really need to get Iced Earth’s “The Glorious Burden”. Tracks 1-5 are all bout how America kicks ass, then so is track 9. The CD ends with a 32-minute trilogy about the Battle of Gettysburg. You need to buy this CD!!!!
also check out Manowar’s “Warriors of the World.” I think the band’s name fits you.
Frank, you want some good tunes expressing American manliness at its best? Get 2 Man Advantage: Drafted. A good puck rock band singing about hockey and beer. On every track. Almost.
I second the sublime, that band is, well, sublime.
How many times do we have to point out that he’s looking for physical CD’s, not just music?? iTunes is not what we’re looking for here!!
Also, if you like the techno mixing with other stuff, give the postal service a try. It’s more mellow, almost indie rock, but the techno is amazing. I saw them live this weekend, it was epic.
Check out Linkin’ Park. If you like POD, you will like Linkin’ Park.
postal service is teh awesome
one of my favorite bands
if you like them check out death cab for cutie, as postal service was a side project of theirs
I believe Mona Lisa Overdrive is the name of a William Gibson novel. I think I read it at some point and it was ok. Not sure what the connection to the Matrix is.
I think you might be ready for Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd. Let me know what you think.
TOOL! TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
That’s all that needs to be said, but ONLY the first 3 albums. (hank rollins) on # 2!
The 4th SUCKS!
I know the GREAT and ALMIGHTY (kiss, slurp, kiss) Frnak J.knows all this, but y’all peons kneads to abandon the fzreakz //Xcept ICED EARTH// they arrr the knew BeAtleeez!
Yeah!Yeah! the mouth breathin’ VRWC haz exposed themsevez! They’re iGnrant!
We’ll still win, you COMMIE PINKOS!!!!!!!
We hav the Supremes! Sacallia sed we wuld win!
Soooooooo. . . . . .SUK IT!!!!!
P.S. don’t drink anything y’all Republicans, the VRWC has poisoned it ALL, just suck on RED MEAT. . .it is the only fluid that is safe (just try to live off anything else you PINKOs)!
It just occurred to me that if it is fast paced hard alternative you are looking for you should check out System of a Down. While some of their songs have a liberal tilt, they have the best song about a pogo stick EVER! And their first album is much better than the hit single played on the radio awhile back.
you also can’t go wrong with smashing pumpkins siamese dream and melancholy and infinite sadness
plus i love machina their last album so all of those any other of their albums are def worth listening to.
if you want more bright try Zwan his band after they broke up they were good as well, th bassist played in a perfect circle.
matt
School of Rock was awesome.
Check out Frank Looby (http://www.franklooby.com/index.html) for some good patriotic rock. I found out about him from a google ad on my blog. There’s generous samples of his music at the link I pasted.
I refuse to watch another Jack black movie after I found out he was a Judge for that Bush in 30 seconds b.s.
He’s on my shit list now,
but anyway, Iced Earth is a great band, I agree with some of the other guys in here.
Soulfly seems fairly Conservative music, check out the lyrics for “Call to Arms”
Also, one of my favorites, Stuck Mojo. Think about them as the Conservative version of Rage against the Machine.
Completly Anti-Democrat, good music, and Patriotic. Get their Declaration of a HeadHunter.
Rip everything to wmas or MP3s and get a portable cd player that can play them about 50 bucks or less now. I can set it to random play and never hear the same song twice in a 10hr work day. Oh and Nickelback has some great angry songs, The Long Road is pretty good.
Frank, I maintain that Kurt Cobain did not kill himself. As a long time native Seattlite, I know just how f’ed up our police force is. The evidence all points to foul play, but Washington State’s laws are so screwy that they (the police) labeled it a suicide and wouldn’t reverse it. Now I don’t think Elvis is still alive or anything, and I’m no crackpot conspiracy theorist, but if you read the book (or watch the documentary) “Kurt and Courtney” you’ll learn some interesting facts that were left out of the popular media reports. Just my two cents.
frank, i’m crushin’ on you, i just love guys who are into music and know the difference between a score and a soundtrack! except that as someone who grew up in the ‘hood, i can tell you it’s “aight”.
“I refuse to watch another Jack black movie after I found out he was a Judge for that Bush in 30 seconds b.s.”
Argh! Why’d you have to tell me that? I guess I’ll be watching his movies on bootleg now.
If you like POD, check out Pillar! They’re just as rockin, but the music is … prettier, for lack of a better word. But in a good way.
Frank, if you like Iced Earth my uncle was the lead singer on their first CD, if you want I could get it autographed for you or something (if you happen to have their first cd, if you don’t, check it out before buying it because I don’t know if they sound the same or different from then).
Also, here’s a list of a lot of cd’s I like
Flogging Molly – Swagger – Drunken Lullabies: An Irish band (have to get it just for that) that is really good in my opinion. A lot of the music is upbeat and about drinking
Flaw – Through The Eyes
Static-X – Basically any cd from them
Deftones – The first couple of cd’s are good and the last two are ok. They have a style of their own, you either like it or you don’t.
Soil – Scars: (haven’t listened to their second cd although I’ve heard them play a lot of it live and it didn’t sound bad)
Mudvayne – L.D. 50
Finger Eleven – Any cd from them. They are Canadian but hey, not everything canadian is bad (i.e. Mike Myers, Jim Carrey)
The “Daredevil” Soundtrack is awesome, I highly recommend it. I listen to it while cycling and it ups my speed by about 30%.
Oh, and one of my favorite indy bands is “Seven Nations”. It’s rock..with bagpipes! They tour a lot of the Irish/Celtic festivals, and clubs in major cities. They were even featured in a Dewar’s ad once.

thadethknell, you’re totally wrong, Lateralus is the BEST Tool CD, not the worst. They’re all sweet, but it’s the sweetest. Plus, you really need to learn the English language.
Megan, your comment that “some of [SOAD’s] songs have a liberal tilt” is my nomination for Understatement of the Year – they’re to the left of Rage. Some good music, yes, but not exactly anywherew approaching sane. Download some of their music(Aeriels first, it’s by far the best), but don’t buy their discs, we have to keep some principles here. Besides, when a bunch of godamn pinkos label their album “Steal This Album!” and mean it, I won’t complain.
Uh, that was me. Oops.
If you liked the original of POD’s “Boom”, check out the remix from The Crystal Method on their 2002 mix CD “Community Service.” Incidentally, that also has their remix of Rage Against the Machine’s “Renegades of Funk.”
Also, the killer drive of Mona Lisa Overdrive comes to you courtesy of Juno Reactor. Check out “Bible of Dreams” or “Beyond the Infinite” for some of the best goa/trance tunes you’ll ever hear. Ben Watkins’ music has been used in soundtracks from Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat, Virtuosity, Wing Commander, and the Animatrix.

I am a HUGE fan of P.O.D. and so are all three of my kids (ages 10, 8 and 4). In fact, my four year old son prefers to nap while listening to it, which seems really weird because it’s so rockin’, but it’s true nonetheless. I like Satellite, and I am also liking their most recent release, Payable On Death. That one has one particular song (“Freedom Fighters”) that quite simply ought to be the theme song for every single member of the US Armed Services, period. Incredible. You have GOT to listen to it, seriously.
HEY! how about a little credit for recommending that Iced Earth CD a while ago in your comments???
damn, no respect.
I now DEMAND a link to my new site, which shall rule the world… well, it probably won’t, but you should link it anyway!
Metallica, Rush, and Iced Earth are all SOLID bands. Congratualtions Frank, you don’t suck.
