  1. The Pope is dead.
And to think that, if he didn’t become a priest way back when, he might just have died in a gulag along with million other anonymous victims. Instead, he was in the prayers of even more people until his last moments and beyond.
The &(^&# commie media completely ignore his anticommunistic past, including the KGB plot to have him assassinated (though the actual would-be assassin was a Muslim).
There’s also some important elections coming up here in Italy, Sunday and Monday. It’s hoped that the death of the Pope will either inspire the right to go vote en masse, or whitewash any possible lefty victory – either way, it seems like the good ole Pope’s still smiling at us down here…

  2. Francesco, while I’m not Catholic, one of the things I most admired about this pope was his rock solid support of two things: political freedom, and life.
The first can be best exemplified by his trip to Poland during the Solidarity uprising. He did it amidst death threats, and the Lord only knows what else. That’s courageous.
The second hardly needs amplification. With the fall of communism, almost all of his time (it seems) was spent defending Life. (Note: not “life” – small ‘l’ – but “Life” – BIG ‘L’!)
I do have theological differences with the R.C. Church on many issues. But I am honored to have witnessed in my lifetime a man with such conviction. That again, was courageous.
Just think that one of his last pronouncements would be to denounce the fate of Terri Shiavo. That’s poignant. And its appropriate.
