Reminder
Tomorrow morning the attack on the moon begins.
Smart People and the Clothes They Wear
At a recent speech, Obama handed out white lab coats to his audience to make them look smarter. That’s a good idea. Only smart people wear white lab coats as dumb people would just stain them with neon orange powdered cheese. Maybe Obama shouldn’t have stopped there, though. Maybe he should also have had them all wear mortar boards and have diplomas to hold in their hands so we would look at them and say, “Wow! These are smart people! If they agree with the president, then I should agree too so I will be smart!”
Actually, the president himself could use some smartening; maybe he should wear a mortar board and a lab coat at all times. Then if someone disagree with him, he could say, “Don’t you disagree with me! I’m very smart! Look at my hat! LOOK AT MY HAT! Now don’t bother me; I’m off to do Science!” He’d be impressive then; I bet everyone would stop making fun of him.
Understanding Freedom
Here’s a neat top ten list of guns (I agree with number one, but you can certainly get a good 1911 for well under $1000), but at the end the author asks whether the right to bear arms is a universal human right. I think that’s a good question that reveals a lot about whether the answerer has any concept of liberty.
Unfortunately, I don’t think a lot of other countries than the U.S. have a good concept of liberty. Europe has a vague imitation of it, but I always hear about odd laws where they put limits on free speech and its pretty clear they just don’t get it. In the response to that post, there are a lot of people from outside the U.S. answering and most of them fall in line with: “People could hurt themselves and others with guns, so we can’t let them have guns.” I think a lot of people approach freedom that way.
“I like free speech, so we should have free speech (except for a few things that are harmful that no one should ever be allowed to say). I don’t like guns; they’re scary. People shouldn’t be allowed to have guns.” There’s no actual concept of liberty — of people being able to make their own choices — in the equation, it’s just what someone is not scared to allow others to do.
A lot of the arguments for government taking over health care are from people who don’t understand liberty or just don’t consider that important. This is why it’s a good battle to fight, because even in our own country there’s a lot of education to do on the subject.
Time for Real Change in DC
I like this idea from Jonah Goldberg: More worthless Congressmen. It’s counterintuitive that more idiots in the House would help things, but I do think we’d be better off with more representation and each of the current Congressmen having less power. And more people means more chaos which means less happening which is usually a good thing.
Congress is really unpopular now, so now is the time to propose some radical change. Republicans could get a lot of backing by bringing some real change to D.C., and this or term limits would be pretty huge. Of course, it will be hard to get Congress to pass laws against itself, but the attempt is a battle worth fighting. If Republicans want more than a few more seats in 2010, they need some big ideas for people to rally behind. And I’d rather those idea target Congress than be laws against us.
Random Thoughts
Future Headline: “Conservatives Angry, Hippies Hardest Hit”
Killing all the lawyers would save us money on health care. Especially if we kill all the sickly lawyers.
If I go to a presidential speech, what should I wear to look more authoritative: a lab coat or a mortar board?
I missed it; did Olbermann win in his fight against death or is he dead now?
I bet death beat him up and gave him a wedgie on air.
I’m always going to wear a mortar board from now on so people take what I say seriously.
I just read a couple paragraphs of Olbermann’s rant and now I just want to punch him over and over in the face until my arms stop working. It was that perfect.
