Unrealistic Plot Developments

Here’s a great post on what makes believable TV versus unbelievable TV. I’m still in the first season of Babylon 5, so I’m waiting to see how that pans out.

  1. Babylon 5 has some pretty good storytelling. There have also been like a half dozen follow up movies. The Euro/Canadians crank out some sci-fi. I also liked the newer:

    Farscape
    Starhunter
    Starhunter 2300
    Hyperdrive
    Red Dwarf
Andromeda (some parts are better then others)

I am trying out the star trek DS9 after a bunch of you talked about how great it was. Only ever watched the star trek movies just couldn’t get into the shows. I am not sure about DS9 I am two episode in and that women is constantly over dramatic. Try a few more maybe shell get hit by a laser.

  2. Shiggz: DS9 takes a season and a half (actually, two seasons; first season is a short season) to lay all the groundwork. If you can stick with it, you might like it.

If it helps, go to Memory Alpha and read up on it. If you think it’s worthwhile, stick with it. But, if you didn’t like TOS, you might not like DS9.

Personally, I nearly gave up on Firefly after watching the 2-hour pilot. I decided to give it a little longer, and fell in love with it by Episode 4.

  3. The most ridiculous episode, Terry_Jim, was Operation Mincemeat. The Brits dropped a dead body with fake information right into the hands of the Germans. The German characters believed the information. The writers are cocksure SOBs to think we would buy this garbage.

  4. It took me like a year and a half to get through all of Andromeda so ill keep giving DS9 a try.

I agree with the guy about Doctor Who. I enjoy it more as long as I am just kinda chilling out watching TV. If your brain is on and paying attention it can be very jarring.

After David Tennent left and I saw the new guy portrayed in news stories as some sort of teen heart-throb I thought Dr Who had finally pushed me the rest of the way out the door. But the New doctor and Amy were both so great in the first episode we were hooked. It has been a pretty great season and with the best cast Dr. Who duo in the 2005 series. Even “Rorrie” (sp?) has been much better then Mickey. Amy Ponds legs and her affinity for mini-skirts dont hurt either. 😉

  5. There is NO part of TV that has anything to do with reality. Not drama, comedy, reality, and especially the news. Most of those people who are responsibility of making said programs wouldn’t know how to live in the real world.

That should be the next reality show. Take big shot movie stars and drop them off somewhere the people don’t like or care about them and see if they can survive. You know use their skill and get real jobs, pay rent, buy groceries, become a member of the community and when they screw up break the law they go to jail. They could call it “Real Life Celebrity Survivor”. They’d never make.

That said I would pay to see it.

  6. My dad had a bit part in that WWII show.
You wouldn’t believe some of the stunt-work he had to do.
Like bailing out of a burning B-17 with a bullet in his foot and a big hole in the only parachute he could find. (It opened on the way down, but just barely.)
The POW show that followed had a good run (20 months) although the plot wasn’t as amusing as Hogan’s Heroes.
My dad is still my hero.
