[High Praise! to According to Hoyt]
All of which comes down to “the government is an awful implement to help the poor” – the government is very bad at evaluating poverty, and though there is often talk of helping the poor acquire skills – this is where Marx comes in – these skills inevitably end up being stuff like “being assertive”, and not “how to dress for an interview”; “know your rights”, not “show up to work on time and do the unpalatable till you become indispensable.”
Show up to work on time! The union’s going to hear about this!
They do help them acquire skills! The 300 lb “poor” person next door to me can smoke AND text on her Obama phone at the same time!! She’s also able to acquire enough free food to maintain her massive weight without ever leaving the apartment, that takes some serious skill.
Town turns down government “help”. At least someone is paying attention.
We should all read Ms. Hoyt more often (blog and fiction both), IMHO.
@3 seanmahair–a quick reading of the article seems to indicate that FEMA turned down the town, not vice versa; and for political reasons.
