Mystery Solved

Why was there a motto at a memorial service? That’s just weird.

And even if you DO have a motto at a memorial service, why would it be “together we thrive”?

I’m thinking “together we remember” would’ve been acceptable for the event, if it absolutely HAD to have a motto – it has an air of comfort for the living and grieving for the lost.

But “thrive”? WTF?

I checked Webster’s, and now I get it.

See, I was thinking of thrive as def. 1 or 2:

1: to grow vigorously : flourish
2: to gain in wealth or possessions : prosper

I forgot about 3:

3: to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances — often used with on

So, what do you suppose that goal is?

Other than, perhaps, slouching toward Bethlehem to be born.

  1. You’re assuming the phrase has anything to do with the tragedy, if you look closely you’ll find the union tag it actually falls under:

2: to gain in wealth or possessions : prosper

  2. “often used with on”
So… they meant thrive as in “The Left ‘thrives on’ hate, chaos and division”? Yeah, I can see that. Kind of how vultures and maggots ‘thrive on’ rotting carrion. Another possibility is that they had a ware-house full of blue “Together we thrive” t-shirts left over from the last campaign that they saw an opportunity to unload.

  3. “Together we thrive” on demonizing Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh for their hate speech where they both called for shooting a congresswoman in Tuscon! It’s like so obvious…duh! That’s right, I get my news from the NY Times and MSNBS and I’m like a complete ghey moron so the T Shirts made me a little misty when I saw them because finally we are like fighting back at all the Right Wing hate speech and stuff! And why does Sarah Palin have to make everything about her? Can’t she just shut her yap and let us talk about her for awhile? She’s as needy as a certain blogger that I know…

  4. Together We Writhe would’ve been more appropriate. After hearing 15 seconds of the beginning of the unicorns’ speech with the concert applause and whistles I closed the connection. I half expected some douchebag to yell “Freebird!”.

  5. The goal of course was to advance the progressive political agenda and vilify the right. This is not new, nor is it surprising. People who are willing to kill unarmed babies in the womb, allow seniors to die, encourage behavior that destroys families, communities and the country and welcomes criminal illegal aliens as long as they vote for them will do anything includomg bribes.

If this is surprising you’ve been living under a rock, with no internet.

  6. Oh, and you can’t blog about Bethlehem! There is a rule about separation of church and state and so forth that applies and if you keep it up we are going to have get the ACLU all up after FrankJ’s ass and everything!

  7. I don’t understand poetry. There was a time when I felt sorry about that, but after reading Nabokov’s comment that Pushkin’s work can not be translated I feel better. Then understanding that Yeats and Shakespeare spoke and wrote in a different language I felt even better. Now I think “Yea, so what!” It’s Greek to me.

  8. My neighbors are getting alarmed. Every time I think of those stupid T-shirts I walk out onto my front deck, grab my crotch and shake it, just a little (any veteran of the prePC military or guy only sports team knows the gesture) and holler “Thrive on this you @#%$&*@ while aiming at Washington, DC.
