  1. Those have actually been around for 30+ years. The parachute is actually an airfoil and generates lift. you turn by pulling cables to change the shape of the airfoil. they’re classified as ultralight aircraft and called a powered paraglider. they don’t require a license to fly. they top out at 20000 ft but generally flown about 100-500 ft which is plenty high enough to kill yourself if you don’t know what you’re doing. they cost about $10k and are nicknamed Doctor Killers.

    they do require a bit of skill to operate safely but they are fun.

  2. most of that contraption is dead weight. a skilled paraglider will just strap a motor right to their back and jump into the air. they will also stall it right above the ground and land on their feet.

    less weight means more flight time and easier to maneuver.
