Clarification Requested

A frozen custard shop in Milwaukee is under investigation by the federal government for only speaking English to its customers.

Wait… if you don’t speak English, how do you know they sell anything you want to eat?

  1. Ghalid: I am confused. You can’t wear a sombrero, you can’t celebrate Cinco de Mayo, you can’t call yourselves Redskins, you can’t wear dredlocks, and you can’t teach yoga classes because they are all “cultural appropriation” — but you must speak every possible language besides English to your customers, and this won’t offend them?

  2. Recommended defense strategy: tie up the Milwaukee prosecutor’s office and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in court for years insisting that they present their indictment in every language, one by one. Followed by the Braille version of each. Even liberal judges have better things to do, believe it or not.

  3. Here’s an idea: If you don’t like it, DON’T GO THERE!
There’s all sorts of businesses in my …sanctuary city that have signs in nothing but spanish and I never thought to go in any of them.
And remember, a person who speaks spanish is a different “race”….regardless of what “race” they are.

  4. So I read the article and I am at a loss to understand, at any level, what law has been violated. At best the premise is that there is a regulation that, and here is the confusing part, forces a business to use secondary languages at work. I guess it must say that since the author of the article does not provide a citation to any actual law or regulation only implying that the owner was “clearly” in “violation” of…something. WHile it might make business sense to encourage communication with all potential customers I am, once again, at a loss to see how the government can REQUIRE you to do so. Otherwise, I would assume, that the arguments made, that what is the owner supposed to do, hire a plethora of linguists to accommodate all possible interactions, make more sense than anything else mentioned. Further, the customer only speaks Spanish. Fine, hey tourists visit many of our finer cities, so what would have happened if she came across an an agent for the store who DIDN’T speak Spanish? This country is headed for a break up of epic proportions. It is going to get ugly and people are going to die.
