I first heard about this on Red Eye: A woman was arrested for selling her baby to put a down payment on a used Dodge Intrepid. Now, someone explain to me why would we want to stop this transaction?
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that someone who would sell her own baby is probably not going to make a very good mother. Know who is responsible, though? People who have enough spare money lying around to buy an extra baby. It takes planning and saving to raise that kind of dough.
So, we have here a transaction that moves a baby from bad parents to good parents… or, at least, better parents. Why would we want to stop that and arrest everyone involved? How does that help the baby?
The fact is that anti-baby selling laws are archaic and were originally established out of racism against gypsies. It’s time to join the modern world and sell our babies.

I knew that Cal Worthngton would take just about anything in a down payment but a baby? Why isn’t anyone looking at the car salesman in this? It was probably his idea.

Aw man, that ain’t right. She should’ve tried for a Ram. And aside from that, they should’ve done some sort of reciprocal lease agreement with an option to buy.
This is just another example of discrimination against illegal aliens (err… excuse me… that should be foreign guest worker immigrants). They are here only to make a better life for themselves and their families. Selling their babies to in to a better life AND getting a truck is what the American dream is all about.

by some strange coincidence, I had the Feb 19 issue of Sports Illustrated open on my desk to Rick Reilly’s column when I read this, and I think you have the woman’s motive all wrong here. The inset quote in the column reads:
“Why do women say ‘If your team frustrates you so much, why do you still watch them?’ That’s like men saying, ‘If your kids frustrate you so much, why don’t you sell them?'”
Obviously the woman is trying to get her husband to stop watching sports. Which probably makes her a worse wife than mother. 😛
Either must not have been much of a baby or one hell of a Dodge Intrepid, if the baby only covered the down payment.
