Olympics, Chicago Style

My new Pajamas Media column is up.

UPDATE:

Epic Fail. You’d at least think I’d be smart enough not to be stunned by his failure, but I honestly assumed Obama had it in the bag. He can’t do the important stuff, so I at least assumed he could deliver the useless crap.

  1. Oh the Humanity!!! What about the children? I must grieve this afternoon and will be informing my client that my services are not available as I go home to send positive vibes and good Karma to our poor battered first couple!!! I can’t begin to imagine their shattered lives, the assault on their personal reputations, which might I add, they put at personal risk to bring the wonderful games of Olymic Glory to America’s 2nd city! And what did they get from the IOC in return? A big loogie in the face and a middle finger up the keister! That’s what! Well, I for one, am not going to take this standing up…I’m going to lie down and do something about it…

  2. It can’t be the crime rate or gang violence or government corruption as they even more of that sort of thing in Rio then there is in Chicago. Therefore I think number three must be correct….the IOC is racist. They must need some mandatory diversity training. Just imagine how many corrupt union leaders, crooked mafia influenced contractors, and bribe taking politicians in Chicago, are really, really pissed off right now.

  3. Jimmy is right as usual, funny piece Frank. I’m thinking Chicago will soon be rioting and looting as a protest, sorta like the plans they had for getting selected. No IHOP will be safe as Illiterate youth put down their bashin’ boards to burn the racist O hating Olympics headquarters.

  4. Well – maybe it wasn’t JUST racism. Maybe the fact that Michelle got up there in Copenhagen, in front of all those Copenhagians and their distinguished guests from all over the world, and whined about what a great sacrifice it was for her to grace them with her presence. Maybe – just maybe – that chapped a few hides.

Naaaahh – what am I thinking? Must be the racism.

  5. as a chicagoian. i didnt vote for obama, i didn’t vote for daley, i am a little saddened that chicago didnt get the olimpics. i am estatic the daley and oboma failed to bring the olimpics here. any one got a broke down mule to trade for the mayor of my city??

  6. Since Rio is in the southern hemisphere and their summer season is from December to March, does that mean we can have both summer and winter Olympic coverage at the same time?
Gymnastics and figure skating on the same day? (Be still, my beating heart)

  9. It’s still a good column.

The thing that was so wrong about this bid is something we all missed: his home town should have been the last place the POTUS should be shilling for. It would have been just as wrong for W. to push Crawford (unlikely) or Dallas or any Texas city (or for President Palin next time around to push an Alaska city, or if Harry Truman had pushed a Missouri town during his tenure, for example). The President is the CEO of the whole US 24/7/365, and really needs to stand apart from his local ties, though we all know every president has them. He’s supposed to rise above that, at least publicly, for 4 or 8 years, that’s all. It’s not too much to ask. He speaks for all of us, not this part or that part, all the time. The mayor’s people should have gone over and maybe there could have been some behind-the-scenes leaning and arm-twisting from the White House…you know, the usual stuff. Only maybe this administration hasn’t cultivated the international ties to allow that kind of stuff to happen: maybe they have no one over there to lean on/butter up. That does happen when “it’s all about me” comes on board.

So, anyway, the Epic Fail goes to the One and his FLOTUS who not only couldn’t stand apart from this publicly but went so far as using taxpayer money to go make their personal pitches for the old hometown. Maybe the Olympics people were making a statement here that we all can learn from: DC not Chi-town is the capital of the US and that is the *only* place Mr. and Mrs. Obama come from for the next 3+ years (what a long, dreary stretch it appears to be up ahead, sigh).

Of course, all that said, the US Olympic teams are gonna whup Brazilian teams across the board when this comes up, not even allowing them into the bronze – oh yah!

  10. Well another bit of good news is that 2016 is so far away that by the time that Olympics happens, President Palin will be landsliding into her SECOND electoral win and the Obamas will be a distant memory…having been impeached in disgrace and extradited back to live in a cardboard box next to his half-brother in their REAL hometown of Indonesia.

    LOL #32 you is funny.
