Ya Gotta Have Standards

A court blocked a Florida law that requires people who apply for welfare to submit to drug testing.

The court did, however, allow them to post a picture of Lindsay Lohan with the words “you must be at least this clean and sober to get welfare”.

  1. Well, that’s a low bar.

When you get down to it, in our current climate there is not likely to be a successful plan to remove benefits for people for any reason. The media will always find one sob story about someone who “accidentally” got a dirty urine and wound up on the street, and politicians will urinate themselves to get the guy into housing–even if most of their constituents are telling them to let the guy rot in the cold for all they care. But it’s not heartless to refuse benefits to addicts; providing them enables the addiction and makes it more dangerous for those with legitimate cases by causing them to live in the same place. We only seem to have the guts to punish people who don’t do anything wrong (like Harvey and the rest of the Moon Nukers).

  2. Personally I don’t care if they cut them off!
but its been my experience (for decades) that Libertarians utterly REJECT drug testing, especially when they are to be tested. I’ve watched scream bloody fraking murder about Drug laws and drug testing being the equivalent to Hitler killing Jews. Ron Paul has always opposed Drug Testing, or at least he used to.

I guess those fine Libertarian principles and Constitutional protections don’t apply to the poor. Gee talk about being 2 faced!! This is exactly why Papa Bush got 48 MILLION more votes than Ron Paul did in 1988 and why the Libertarians will never succeed.

  3. The judge was wrong, so I hope Florida appeals. Welfare is to help people who are in poverty. If you have enough money to purchase illegal drugs, you don’t need public assistance. The taxpayer does not need to be forced to support your habit. So, if a welfare recipient comes back with a dirty drug screen, they should be premanently cut off of welfare, but also permanently evicted from public housing, and permanently disallowed any taxpayer paid benefit.
I would like to see Florida to enact a law concerning pre-employment drug screenings that would require the employer submit, at the prospective hiree’s request, to a thorough search of his (or her) domicile for illegal weapons, illegal drugs and child pornography.
I would also like to see a federal law that members of Congress, the President, the Supreme Court Justices, and all department heads be required to be tested for illegal drugs and alcohol each morning. If they have a hot sample, then they are immedaitely and permanently removed from office, they forfeit any government pension, and they are forever prohibited from holding any other office, elected or appointed. Maybe that would slow some of the BS down.
