Of course, people will think this is all part of a government conspiracy to conceal evidence of UFOs. So what’s crazier: Believing that space aliens have visited us or that there are groups of people in the federal government actually competent enough to pull off conspiracies and cover ups?

Agreed. Every now and again I see Carville and think about that line from Men in Black regarding Dennis Rodman: “Not much of a disguise.”

Yes.
Yeah, believing that the government is capable of pulling off a conspiracy might be grounds for involuntary commitment.
The government is made up of a bunch of individual people, and the nature of government burearcracy means the whole is significantly less than the sum of the parts. And given that government employees are far from the best, brightest, and most motivated of our citizens, maintaining a wide-ranging conspiracy is right out.
Heck, it’s amazing they can get anything done at all.
My favorite conspiracy theory to debunk is: if the moon landing was faked in a soundstage, why haven’t we bothered to “land on the moon” again?
I’ve never gotten a good answer to that question.
@6 – In a similar vein, it always kinda irked me that Bush *didn’t* fake the discovery of large stockpiles of WMDs in Iraq.
