Question

Do you think Romney’s speech today was aimed at people who were considering not voting for him because he’s Mormon or people considering not voting for him because they think people won’t vote for him because he’s Mormon? Or was it just a pointless grab for attention?
I ask, because I personally couldn’t bring myself to care about it. I know what Mormonism is, I think I have a fairly good idea who Romney is, so I didn’t feel their was anything worthwhile to glean from his speech. He is my second choice right not out of the Republican frontrunners, and I don’t think a speech on religion is going to change that. Who is the target audience that would have their opinions changed by his speech?

  1. Mainstream media can hardly mention Romney without mentioning his religion or the challenge that his religion poses to him. I think he is just trying to stem the tide of negative messages that the “average” voter is getting. I thought it was a great speech and I’m not even Christian.

  2. will.see has no idea what he is talking about. This is an idea that comes directly from South Park. Spouting off things like this is no different than getting your “news” from Stephen Colbert or John Stewart.
What a load of crap. And to say Mormons are “smug” about it too. Pathetic. Really.

  3. You’re right tom, saying Mormons are smug about it is incorrect. How about “Gleeful,” is that better?
Mormons have great family values, but did Romney explain the coffee and Amway thing? I wouldn’t vote for him if I couldn’t have coffee anymore.

  4. Isn’t “gleefull” a code word for GAY? So maybe the mormon cult, even tho they want multipul marriage, really is a GAY cult? We know the catholic cult is GAY cuz the priests can’t have sex with women. And muslims? The high “holy” men in that cult spell out how to have sex with goats.
I dunno. I’m beginning to wonder about any one that “believes” in a 1500-2000 year old superstition where the “diety” hasn’t been heard from lately.. At least the Smith guy from the mormons was an actual historical person.
But I wouldn’t give money to any of them.

  5. There were two target audiences: Hillary and the leftist mainstream media. As one reader pointed out in another post, there is no necessary mystery or secrecy shrouding the religion, so it’s best for Mitt that the facts get aired “at a time and place of [his] choosing” rather than later, over Hillary’s PA system. Romney has never tried to run based on his religion, but the MSM wouldn’t have it and simply won’t let the issue rest. This is purely a defensive maneuver on his part.

  6. Mitt’s speech was a desperate cry for more high temperature lithium grease in his gearbox. Had he come out and discussed Social Security, we would have known (by checking his fault warning light reference chart) that he needed us to top off his coolant.

  7. Well since ever debate, interview or news story contains a “MORMON” reference my guess is he got tired of dealing with the issue piecemeal and wanted to get it done and out of the way before the real campaigning started.
BTW: When was the a last time a candidates religion was mentioned in every article about him. Oh yeah that would be John Kennedy. Jimmma’ Carter talked about his faith a lot but nobody cared. The rest of them may have had some kind of religious leanings but they were never considered important enough to write about. Could be that’s the issue right there. People say they want someone who believes in God as a leader, just not someone who acts upon that belief.
Some people will just not let it go. That is why he addressed it. That is why he wasted valuable time dealing with it.

  8. My thoughts on this were that he was dodging the issue.
The reason a lot of evangelicals and even conservative Catholics like myself are apprehensive about this guy, is because we know Mormons believe a lot of things that are just nuts. That doesn’t make us bigots or haters, and the implication that we are is rather insulting.
Mormonism was started as a scam. Mark Twain recognized as much at the time. It’s scientology plus 150 years. A lot of things that they take as gospel in the Book of Mormon, are demonstrably false. (No, there is no evidence that Israelites lived in pre-Columbian America.) His family has been heavily involved in the cult since the begining. We had a right to know how much of the Koolaid he’s been drinking.
    Romney avoided these questions deftly.
Still, I find Romney perferable to Giuliani or McCain, if it came down to that. He’s probably my third choice.

  9. Romney was just trying to steal votes away from the surging Huckabee. He was kissing up to the Christians and saying anyone on bended knee is a friend and we all love Jesus – it was a pure political ploy to try to get the Christian votes on his side.
Friend to anyone who’s prayed? That would include Saddam and Usama and heaven knows who. It didn’t include me or any of the other non-religious conservatives, who now are hearing Theocracy alarm bells. Its all about religion.
    From the Wall Street Journal:
“Some [Mormons] even see in him the potential to fulfill a 160-year-old premonition by Mormon founder Joseph Smith, known as the “White Horse Prophecy.”
In 1843, according to followers of Smith, he predicted that one day American citizens would be denied their most basic rights and the U.S. Constitution would “hang like a thread as fine as a silk fiber.” “A terrible revolution will take place in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be left without a Supreme Government, and every specie of wickedness will be practiced rampantly in the land,” Smith reportedly said.
It would then be up to the Mormon people, symbolized by a white horse, to ride in and save the republic from collapsing.”

  10. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, disliking someone because of their religion is just intellectually lazy.
I mean, there are just so many reasons to dislike most people that there really is no excuse for using something like their religion or race.
Conversely, there are so few reasons to like most people, and so few people that it’s actually possible to like, that it’s pretty stupid to unnecessarily restrict the pool of people you can like because of their religion.

  11. Hey Veeshir,
A lot of people I like have wierd ideas.
I have some great friends next door who are Mormons and we have had great in depth discussions (which is partly why I know so much about their religion).
I have liberal friends with wierd ideas too.
And if you have wierd ideas, we would probably be friends too. I like people with wierd ideas. I’d like to be your friend. Can you be friends with a heathen like me?
But I still don’t want someone with really wierd ideas to be our President. Its scary.
I have a thing for honesty. The truth is out there. The truth shall make you free. No sacred cows in my world – Just people who should be friends and embrace the facts.

  12. That came from South Park?
So Saddam ISN’T up there surrounded by Mormons as punishment for repeatedly killing Satans’ new boyfriend Chis only to begin a WMD program in heaven prompting the governmant to begin constrution of a tower to Heaven in order to inspect the site?

  13. @reality intrudes: Yeah, I don’t want somebody with wacky ideas ABOUT POLITICS to be president. Or if his wacky ideas are likely to generate wacky political policy, I don’t want to vote for him either. This latter point was what the speech aimed at: letting people know that however wacky you find his beliefs, they won’t translate into policy. I don’t know about you, but I frankly don’t care what other wacky ideas he has, so long as he’s got his political head on straight.
That being said, I’m a Mormon and not a Romney supporter (I’m for Fred). I really liked what he did with the Olympics, and I thought he couldn’t possibly pull it off, but he did. I just don’t think it’s the same skill set that one needs for the presidency… although, he might surprise me again.

  14. Nice he knows who Jesus is but somebody, if they had the guts, should ask him about Joseph Smith and just where are those tablets he decoded. How come they are not on public view? Apparently, the Bible isn’t good enough but with the book of mormon, the way to salvation is clear. Not! It doesn’t make any difference, all politicians claim some kind of faith which they practice only when they are running for some office–any office.
