Wednesday Night Open Thread

This week is the 50th anniversary of the flight of Apollo 11. That’s kind of a big deal with me. I was a fan the space program during the 1960s. Yeah, I enjoyed the TV shows with Mr. Spock, Will Robinson and the Robot, and other spacemen, but there were real live spacemen on TV, too. And when I ran across a video of sections of real-time coverage from ABC, I enjoyed it. All six hours of it.

I shared the launch and TLI a couple of days ago. And now here’s the landing and walk. Yeah, these are long videos, and I’m certainly not expecting you’ll watch them this late at night, but you might want to bookmark them and come back to them later. That’s what I did.

  1. Mea culpa! It was me — I meant to give this a thumbs-up, but hit the Tofu instead. I immediately tried to undo it by clicking the down-vote a second time, but no dice. Who would down-vote the moon landing? (Present Congress excluded)

    • Putting a man on the moon today wouldn’t happen today, or for another dozen years. It would take that long to put together all the hardware and infrastructure a moon landing would require. Not to mention the cost. 60 years ago at the beginning of the space program the US had a very minimal national debt, and very few of the social programs and other mandatory spending lines in the US budget that we have today. I would be truly amazed to see another man walking on the moon in my lifetime.
