Super Bowl The Big Game Ad Talkback

So what ad did you like best? I liked the one for the local news at eleven.
UPDATE: SarahK has a post on all the commercials here. I probably liked the “crime detterence” one best. The Fed Ex one was good, but old-fashioned physical comedy beats out special effects in the end. The other Sprint/Nextel commercial (with the couch on fire) was also pretty good.
And were Sarah and I the only ones who liked the Emerald Nuts commercial?

  1. The “Magic Fridge” took the top honors. Next would be the “Streaking Sheep”, then Fed Ex. The rest of the offerings were sub-par. Which was disappointing, because I wasn’t very interested in the game. Man, why do they have to interrupt good commercials with a damned Football game?

  2. Based on the reaction in my living room, here’s how they shake down:
    1. FedEx (biggest laughs, came up off and on for the rest of the evening)
    2. Magic Fridge (I missed this one, unfortunately, but the reaction brought me running back into the room from the sadly normal bathroom that did not present me with beer).
    3. Sprint/Nextel/Benny Hill. (you can’t go wrong with Benny Hill)
    4. “Sheep Streaker” (ranked high because most of the group thought they’d seen the ad before and liked being surprised by it)
5/1 Emerald Nuts. 5 for most of the room, but #1 with the gamers, who spent the rest of the afternoon saying “Druids Love Emerald Nuts.” Why? They’re gamers. ’nuff said.

  3. Based on my reactions drinking alone in my basement, here are the top Super Bowl commercials:
    1. The Michelob Ultra Commercial where the woman gets blistered with that tackle, and with the insult-to-injury trash talking. The ending caught me totally off-guard, and she hits like a young 9-fingered Ronnie Lott.
    2. The Emerald Nuts commercials are always the highlight of the night. This one was no different. Druids, ha. Reminded me of the evil midget druids from “Phantasm.”
    3. The cute Budweiser commercial with the baby Clydesdale pulling the card with its parents pushing from behind to make him feel like a big horse. Quite possibly the cutest commercial since the Coke drinking baby polar bear. So sweet it gave me diabetes, in a good way.
    4. The CareerBuilder commercial with the monkeys AND the jackasses, if only because they must’ve filmed that with my coworkers. The only thing I would’ve added was a monkey riding a jackass.
    5. The Budweiser commercial with the packed stadium with fans using cards to simulate a beer opening, flowing across to an empty glass, then being drank, only to culminate in a giant refreshed “Ahhh.” That commercial was so good I had to get another beer after watching it. Kudos to thinking outside the box.
The Magic Fridge was good, but it had a been there, done that feeling after the disappearing beer commercial a few years ago that Miller did (I believe). GoDaddy was lame, and the Diet Pepsi ads (save for the Diet Coke jab) were beyond lame.
A disappointing Super Bowl, and very disappointing ads. It’s like the companies knew no one cared about the game, so they didn’t care about bringing the pain in the ad game.
