John Hawkins has a good post on what Fred Thompson’s political prospects are looking like. A lot of people seem to be down on Fred Thompson because he doesn’t seem to want the presidency enough because he’s not like Hillary and constantly glaring at the presidency while rubbing his greedy hands together while proclaiming, “Soon that power will be mine! All mine!” Who are Republicans planning on voting for, then? With the other candidates, you’re stuck hoping they’ll not govern as president like they governed in the past. Not only is Fred Thompson a great conservative with record to back that up, he’s the only top tier candidate without glaring flaws. Here’s my problems with the other top tier Republican candidates for president:
* Rudy Giuliani: He loves aborting babies and grabbing guns. He can’t help it. You just know he’s going to abort some babies while president and start taking people’s guns while they’re not watching. He says he’ll appoint some Supreme Court judges who will try and stop him from aborting babies and grabbing guns, but Giuliani is pretty tough and I don’t know if any judges will be able to stop him when he puts his sights on a baby to abort or a gun to grab. Plus, you just know he’s going to have huge scandals; he is from New York City. They will probably be an entertaining scandals, so weight that as you will.
* Mitt Romney: Governed pretty much as liberally as you would expect a Republican elected governor of Massachusetts would be. He was passing mandatory universal healthcare that used federal tax dollars to pay for abortions, but now he’s a conservative? If you’re generous, you can say he’s been a conservative all this time and was just pandering liberal to get elected in Massachusetts, but that’s still not too reassuring. Also, I hear rumors that he’s a Scientologist.
* Mike Huckabee: He loves taxes and illegal immigrants. In fact, the only thing he loves more is pie. It really looks like his presidency would just be the worst parts of the Bush presidency, and the only way he’d be remarkable were he to get back to his fighting weight and take the “Fattest President” title from Taft. And then there’s his name. Great name for a cartoon hillbilly dog, but not a president.
* John McCain: He’s John McCain.
As for how each of them will do on the War on Terror, they all have good rhetoric, but they’ve all had trouble on the illegal immigration and I don’t quite trust people to protect the country who don’t quite the sovereignty issue. How are they going to know what to protect if they don’t understand what borders are?
As far as I see it, Fred Thompson is the only choice.
BTW, I reserve the right to take all this back and delete the post so I can enthusiastically get behind whoever is the Republican nominee.

I think you need to lay off Rudi. I mean, it’s obvious the only reason he grabs guns from law-abiding citizens is that he needs them to kill law-abiding unborn babies. I mean, who do they think they are, just coming into the world without anyone’s permission?
In addition to his support for baby slaughters and gun stealing, Rudy also believes in global warming. He thinks AlGore’s movie is good for scaring people, but doesn’t offer enough solutions. Shows how dumb Rudy is, since Gore has the solution- buy carbon credits, and global warming will go away.
Also, Rudy seems to think that polution causes global warming. He is wrong. Gore thinks carbon dioxide causes global warming, which isn’t a polluntant. Here’s the video. http://pajamasmedia.com/2007/02/giuliani_criticizes_gore_for_n.php
I know this is about top tier candidates, but I saw duncan hunter on Glenn Beck’s program a few nights ago and I was really impressed, I’m going to look into him a bit more. Right now I can totally agree that Fred Thompson is the right choice in top tier but if Duncan turns out to be a better(more conservative) candidate who approaches all the issues(Iraq/Iran) with the right attitude I will hope that he will get more coverage.
It’s worse than scientology. Mitt’s (gasp) a Mormon. He believes in obeying the laws of the land, God, Faith, responsibility, and all that other antiquated hogwash.
God, for many is simply a box to check off. I wonder how many of us would pass if we were asked to PROVE our God credentials (as many do about abortion) or if we’d look like the libs, all talk and no action or worse symbolism over substance. (sorry, just an some what off topic observation)
Thompson’s chances are done. Not even the bogus endorsement by the National Right to Life Committee (even though he is opposed to their primary agenda: a federal ban on abortions) will be enough to revive this campaign. That endorsement did nothing more than re-arrange the chairs on the Titanic.
I never thought it could ever happen, but I see Huckabee surging through and winning this thing. He’s virtually tied with Romney in Iowa now, he’s ahead of Fred in New Hampshire, and right with him in Florida. If Huckabee wins Iowa, and Fred finishes 4th or 5th, I’d say it gives Huckabee the advantage in SC over Fred.
Rudy and Hillary are not so different. Both have amazingly screwed up relationships with people.
If they can’t run their own family lives properly, how can they aspire to running a whole country?
I’m just glad you didn’t mention Dr. Ron Paul.
God Bless Ron Paul!
Ron Paul for President!
Ron Paul will overcome the Evil Empire before lunch!
Ron Paul: the pinnacle of perfect political perseverance & puissance, pal.
You want to bear children & name them all Ron, Paul, Ronny, Pauly, Pon Raul, Robble Robble or any other variation of our dear Pope Ron Paul!
Good God, that was painful! How the f**k do Pauliticians do that every day?!?
Huckabee likes taxes, WTF? He’s the only candidate to sign on for the FairTax plan – eliminate the income tax and replace it with a value-added sales tax (in fairness, Fred Thompson said he’d sign it if it crossed his desk). No more insane, savings-punishing, lawyer-enriching tax code. The FairTax is the second most important issue in my book. In regard to the first issue, I have no doubt that Huckabee would continue the fight against the jihadofascists and would be able to pull the country behind it. If the primary were held to-day, Huck would have my vote.
I’ll support the Republican nominee as long as it isn’t Romney. Yep, I’d vote for Ron Paul before I’d vote for Romney. There, I said it.
The simple possibility of a Hillary vs. Romney campaign is making it hard for me to keep my lunch down.
When i look at that way they are all equally as weak as the other..including Thompson.
Maybe Romney will become god of earth when the Mormon Jesus is going to retire under the newer inspiration of Mitt OR maybe this will ensure he gets his own planet.
The important thing is to vote R.
That was a little harsh on Rudi i agree

It’s about time somebody said it. They can’t hold a candle to amazingly-successful father Ronald Reagan.
I had the chance to see Thompson at a New Hampshire event and came away convinced that he might be well qualified to fill the office of President but will never be elected because he absolutely SUCKS at campaigning. His speech was as good as any I’ve seen at a PTA meeting. He failed to present any positive positions and never connected with the crowd. In a State where he must make a major showing or drop out he left most people, and there were less than 60 ot 70 present, shaking their heads and wondering what all the hype was about. I was totally disappointed by what I saw. He was not even close to the persona he projects on screen.
You know, all of the candidates have thier strong points and thier flaws. You can rest assured that anyone of them is a better choice than Madam Evil.
I say any R is still better than Her Thighness.
And reading this thread, I’m sad how that’s not saying much.
We need another Ronaldus Maximus. NOW.
Viva la Reagan Revolución!
Red State Titan is on to something. Duncan Hunter is right on all the big issues. I wish he could break through into the top tier.
As to those predicting a President Huckleberry? Yeah, right.
I would take a lazy, conservative federalist over a neurotic, busybody, nanny-state socialist anyday!
Fools! Do you not fear the wrath of Chuck Norris?
Chuck is for Huck!
Except you didn’t post any analysis of Tom Tancredo, so it’s all useless anyway.
REALLY slow day at work, so I’m watching red dawn on google video. A little corny 20, a little old, but it has great moments. And then there are scenes like this one:
Mayor Bates: [in Mayor Bates’ office, where he is being questioned by Colonel Bella] Daryl, he wouldn’t hurt a fly. I know my son, Colonel. He’s not the guerrilla type.
Colonel Ernesto Bella: According to records, Mayor… your son is a prominent student leader.
Mayor Bates: Yes, well… he’s a leader, but not in a violent or physical way. You see, Daryl… he’s more of a politician, like his father.
Colonel Ernesto Bella: A member of an elite paramilitary organization: “Eagle Scouts.”
Mayor Bates: Yes, but that’s not military. If he’s alive, he’s scared, he’s hungry… and he’s just as anxious to avoid conflicts as you and me. He’s not a troublemaker.
Colonel Ernesto Bella: Then who is?
Mayor Bates: …It runs in some of the families.
Colonel Ernesto Bella: [to an aide-de-camp] This community is indeed fortunate to have a shepherd like him.
Mayor Bates: Well, I just want to see this thing through, Colonel.
I can’t help but see a good deal of Mayor Bates in Fred.
First Im a far right conservative……..of all the candidates out there FRED THOMPSON im from tenn too, is the only candidate who comes near meeting my far right concerns. Now fred Ive voted for you many times and back home weve got a problem called the smoking ban that mr. liberal bredesen just screwed us over with…….While im not a lawyer it just seems that we the people have been violated to the extreme….. Now myself and 2.6million tenneseans have been deemed class c felons and outlaws by the state………if you were to put black in the place of smoker in the law as written youd see more lawsuits than anything for loss of employment, segregation ie smoking areas which have been bannished……. the list goes on….. I have noticed that there is a growing disgust among the voters not only over smoking bans but about the loss of personal rights and freedoms thru out the country…..Ever sence these liberals won in november 06 across the nation laws and regulations have been passed eroding the rights and liberties of the people… If you get on the band wagon and harp on the freedom of the people shall not be infringed and you become the leader of the rights of the people you will have a winning agenda……..its not just gun rights or smokers rights but the rights of free americans to live life as they see that life to be lived without worry that someone or group will bannish them and their freedom of choise in that life they so choose……..PICK UP THE BALL and run for the rights of all americans on a strong platform of individual rights and liberty………no one has the right to force another american to live by the standards of another……….this is freedom we must protect.
And may GAWD save and endure the freedom and traditions that are american, for without god and traditions america will waver and fall…..thank you fred the best damn senator tennesee ever had.
I’m not sure who will win the nomination yet, still too early & the @#$@#ing votes haven’t been cast yet.
Fred sure hasn’t gotten much good press, has he? Every time he comes out with a proposal, the media ignore it & want to talk about rudy v. romney & will huckabee? You’d think they’d want to slam him on the social security stuff but they’ve ignored it also.
Romney’s little bud Wyerich sure pissed on the wrong group… NRTL won’t leave a stub! Thinking about it, getting rid of Roe v. Wade is the best way to save more babies as quickly as possible. Is federalism so hard to grasp, that some things are not the business of the federal government???
Rast, if you see mayor bates in Fred Thompson you need to get to the optician or psychiatrist, ’cause that comparison is ridiculously inane & insane…
Enough blowing smoke, already! They passed it here in New York and every bar owner cried it would be the end of the world; four years later you can’t swing a dead cat and not hit a new bar opening up. Any loss in some jerkoff smoker’s rights are more than made up in the savings in my laundry bill.
And I’ll tell you something else – there’s no going back. A few donkey-owned places let you light up (just like Ireland – oh no, wait, it’s banned there too) after midnight, but I just do an about face when I stumble into one of these joints – it’s absolutely intolerable. Even my smoker friends have to agree.
What was the topic again? Oh yeah, Fred Thompson. Get the black bunting ready. And can a guy polling in single digits in some places be called a top tier candidate? His appearance in this race is a lot like his role on “Law and Order” – show up late, look firm and determined, spew a few folksy nuggets, but ultimately have very little to do with the outcome.
I’m sorry, fellow IMAOers – I know you all had such high expectations. But, as Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, “Politics ain’t beanbag.” I get the distinct feeling his wife wanted this more than he did. It will be interesting to see how long THAT marriage lasts after all is said and done. Although the way he looks, she can probably just wait him out and get all of it.
One would think the best president would be the guy who doesn’t really want the job; power isn’t going to corrupt someone who doesn’t care for it. It would make me want to vote for him more, if that were possible.
What about Ron?
…you gotta love it, Ron’s kooky supporters are minting their own currency…

“As far as I see it, Fred Thompson is the only choice.

Fred Thompson would give you a roundhouse kick for that.
“Fred Thompson would give you a roundhouse kick for that.”
…after his nap.
Well, it’s a damn good thing we have at least one Giuliandroid to counteract the spamtacular Paulbots.
But, to be fair, I wouldn’t put out a fresh smoke on Rudy’s forehead; cigarettes are expensive!
I’m just kidding, of course…
Thank you, Frank! Seriously…not saying that some politicians should get a free pass and others shouldn’t, but I think certain people have been slamming Thompson far too much. Okay, so what if you don’t like Fred? Is there a better alternative? You would take Romney, Guliani or McCain instead? Seriously.
