Justice Mary Poppins

My Pajamas Media column today is a sing-along.

  1. I has been a loooong time since I saw that movie in the original theater run. I looked it up in Wikipedea to remind myself of the plot and found this bit interesting…

Mr. Banks…take his children with him to the bank where he is employed. Mr. Dawes, Mr. Banks’ extremely elderly employer, aggressively tries to persuade Michael to invest his money in the bank. Michael is an ill mannered child and refuses to obey his father or indulge Mr Dawes. When Michael protests, the other customers misunderstand, and start a run on the bank that forces the bank to suspend business.

We now ensure that this will never happen – we no longer give children choice in whether or not the banks get their money.

Oh, that we were as wise as young Michael – or that the young Michael’s of today had his freedom of choice.

  2. Hurry, Justice, and many thanks,
    Sincerely, Jane and Michael Banks.

It’s disturbing that I still remember the final lines (substitute “nanny” for “Justice” above) forty-four years after I saw the movie, but I frequently don’t remember where my keys or my reading glasses are.

  3. Sweet little ditty, Frank. Now we need the video. We know that Sarah K. can sing…. srsly, break out the webcam and make it so.

FWIW, upon re-watching Mary Poppins with the grandboys I was shocked at the anti-capitalist, communism through anarchism views hidden in that spoonful of sugar. (And how bad Dick Van Dyke’s cockney accent really was.) Just the right note for the administration of Hopey-Changiness.

  4. The entire time I was reading that, I was reminded of the song in the Simpson Episode with Sherry Bobbins, “Half-Assed Job”. Seems apropos with the current administration.

  5. What I remember about Mary Poppins(besides her being practically perfect in EVERY way), is that the mom needed the Nanny to look after the children while she went out rabble-rousing; “Votes for women!”.>>> Frank J., perfect analogy of what O-bah-muhh is searching for: The Perfect Nanny for His Perfect Government Nanny-State
