Fred Thompson just made a nearly direct attack on Rudy Giuliani in his blog over guns. There are two issues that are big problems for Giuliani in the Republican primary: abortion and guns. I’m surprised so much attention has been on abortion when his stance on guns could hurt him even more (not even Democrats running for national office speak out against guns anymore).
Now, Giuliani has tried to reshape his image on this issue, but his pandering shows shows how completely tone deaf (he tried to explain that gun rights are okay in other places than big cities). Also, he has a record of not just being anti-gun, but being really anti-gun where he’s been involved in lawsuits that tried to take away gun rights for more places than just his city.
His stance on abortion of saying he’d appoint judges like Roberts will get him so far (it would help if he came out against Roe v. Wade which is a horrible Constitutional ruling despite what one may feel about legalized abortion), but something similar is not going to work for guns. Republicans won’t respect someone opposed to gun ownership — a Constitutional right — and I don’t think anything other than him bowing down and asking for forgiveness for past sins will be accepted.
Something about Rudy just doesn’t pass the ‘smell test’ with me. This confirms it.
Yeah, ChisA, I know what you mean. That guy just ain’t right (I think the NY firefighters have it right). So, the only thing I CAN say is that Rudy would be better than Hillary.
A one term actor politician who was elected on a “pro-choice” stand. He also supported the McCain-Feingold “reform”. Now he hits the spotlight and he is “pro-life.”

I’m not surprised you don’t “get” Fred!, WB, as he tends to appeal to those with the intellect and integrity to appreciate the finer things in life.
Rudy would be better than Hillary or Obama, but by how much?? In my opinion not much–I am pro-life but that is between a woman and God, I am also very pro-gun. Rudy is as bad as Bloomberg when it comes to guns, and I say us pro-gun, pro-life, patriots need to stand up and in one fluid motion back-hand the loons back into kool-aid-land. Anyone who believes that Rudy is pro-gun need only to look at his record as mayor of NYC.
Guiliani isn’t even an after thought for me. He was good for NY in 2001, but in light of 9/11, he should’ve made gun ownership mandatory for people who live within 500 feet of a mosque. That might have put a healthy respect for us infidels on their conniving little black hearts.
Rudy will govern like a conservative when I develop a “hankerin” to DO Hillary! Ain’t gonna happen…EEVER!!! These liberal pricks come along after governing as left wingers and then want our votes? With Pelosi and Reid in charge of Congress? Yea…whatever!

Rudy is a conservative in much the same manner that King Kong was just a Harmless ape or Godzilla an innocent little lizard. I cannot abide the man. Fred! all the way.
Frank makes a great point: While Rudy may be able to finesse the abortion question he cannot explain to millions of gun rights advocates how he could ever support the litigation strategy proposed by gun control zealots. Liability suits against firearms manufacturers was a scheme promulgated by the Clintonistas to obviate the need for legislated gun restrictions. Rudy jumped in with both feet, and the assault on the Constitution continues under Lil’ Mike Bloomberg.
Of course, in a choice between Hillary and Rudy I will hold my nose and pull the lever for Guliani, but I won’t like it.
Fred! is the answer.

I’d happily support Rudy — but for VP, with FRED! at the top of the ticket.
There is nothing wrong with a little honest political diversity between the two members of the ticket in order to appeal to the broader audience. But the more conservative man needs to be at the top, and the less conservative man needs to spend his time as VP proving he really is a conservative if he wants to be on top 8 years later.
If Rudy spent 8 years as VP promoting gun rights, his sins would be forgiven as far as I am concerned.

Nobody’s taking your guns away, especially in the boonies where it seems most IMAOers live. Please don’t get hung up on non-issues like gun control and abortion. I mean really, how long are we gonna go on about abortion, for God’s sake?
The opening moves of WW III are being made as we speak, and unless you want Hillary as the Commander in Chief when the shit hits the fan, you better get behind Rudy. He is the only Republican who can beat her, no matter how much you like Fred.
Look, I don’t expect any of you to believe me, but the fact of the matter is this thing will all be over by February 5th. You have my solemn oath to pull the lever for Fred in November ’08 if he is the nominee. Just promise me you won’t be cleaning and loading your guns, lost in some “Turner Diaries” fantasy when it comes time to pull that lever for Rudy.

I could go into a history overview (from what I think) about the civil war, state governing independence & the right to bear arms (and why it most certainly matters), but you’re alluding to how we might be just acting like reactionaries to rumors; I disagree.
It’s one thing to get worked up about 9/11 theories and secret negotiations with Al Qaeda, but it’s different to fight FOR certain American liberties that, if they were absent, the idea of being a citizen of the republic would be a mere title bestowed by the ruling class; even seemingly non-issues have their importance simply because we get the choice to fight for them.
I don’t think Giuliani would be so terribly bad as a leader. He might be very effective & we’ve seen that in him already, but he wouldn’t be my first choice if Thompson commits.
