In the debate over illegal immigration, does anyone ever think of the mapmakers? They spent years getting that line depicting the border between the U.S. and Mexico just right. Every little bump and divot in that line is pregnant with meaning to them.
But no one cares. It’s like they’re life’s work doesn’t even exist. Illegal immigrants just run into America with no thought to the line those mapmakers spent so much time and care drawing. How can they go home at the end of the day and smile to their family knowing their life’s work is meaningless? When a mapmaker’s son asks, “Daddy, what do you do at your job?” the mapmaker has to use all his will not break down crying.
You’ll usually find the mapmakers down at the bar drinking their pain away, talking of a time when those lines on the map meant something. When they meant something.

I know this will seem simplistic but why don’t we as a nation build a monument to these unsung heros who toil unceasingly for our protection and geographic education.
How about a nice tall, thick, fence with cameras and armed custodians to police it. We wouldn’t want anyone to tamper with our tribute. In this way every pregnant curve will give birth to not only thanks to our map makers but to security for our citizens and freedom to our country.

I heard a comedian once say that we should line the border with those plastic sticks they use to separate your groceries at the checkout stand. Nobody every messes with those!! That is one border you never see anyone cross!

Ironically enough, by far the most famous American cartographer is the late Erwin Raisz, a Harvard professor and a legal immigrant from Hungary. If the borders are being ignored, you can bet it is a border best illustrated by a Raisz Landform Map. (No, I’m not related in any way to Dr. Raisz, his map company, or, thank God, Harvard University!)
Thank you Frank, for standing up for cartographers the US over. I feel I will finally get the respect I deserve as a mapmaker now. You have brought our plight to the forfront and I vow to move the border 1 inch to the south every time I update my base file.
Frank, you’re still not fully understanding Liberals. How they feel about people who make maps will depend upon the following:
1) Does the Liberal get free maps? If not, then who cares.
2) Is the map maker black or gay? If so, the government must subsidize map making.
3) How much do the people who make maps make? If it’s more than the Liberal, they are evil and deserve to die.
4) Will the map maker have sex with the Liberal? If not, they are evil and deserve to die.
5) Does the map maker support abortion? If not, they are evil and deserve to die.
Without these key answers or talking points from Hillary or Bill Clinton, Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi, the Liberal is defenseless in his or her attempt to respond to your question…other than blaming Bush, which is always a given.
